ICP Forests was launched in 1985 under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) due to the growing public awareness of possible adverse effects of air pollution on forests. ICP Forests monitors the forest condition in Europe, in cooperation with the European Union using two different monitoring intensity levels. The first grid (called Level I) is based on around 6000 observation plots on a systematic transnational grid of 16 x 16 km throughout Europe. The intensive monitoring level comprises around 800 Level II plots in selected forest ecosystems in Europe. Currently 40 countries participate in the ICP Forests. ... [Information of the supplier]
The Forest Ecosystems Research Center (Forschungszentrum Waldökosysteme or FZW) is part of the Forest Faculty of the University of Göttingen and carries out research into structural dynamics and element recycling processes in sylvan ecosystems as well as into the adaptability of forests in the face of environmental change. This includes study of the interaction between the ecosystems and their environment and the new types of forest damage. Last not least, these investigations also lead to an appraisal of commercial feasibility. The aim is to find out under which conditions sustainable forest management is possible. These conditions include natural factors such as climate and soil development as well as human factors such as the use of biomass and atmospheric pollution. Thus the Research Center studies the effects of atmospheric element deposition and forest management on sylvan ecosystems as well as the effects element outflow has on the environment of these ecosystems. An analysis of cause and effect is a condition for establishing critical loads and taking suitable measures for the stabilisation of sylvan ecosystems. Only in this way can detrimental environmental effects - such as on ground water - be avoided and sustainable forest management implemented. The Forest Ecosystems Research Center co-ordinates and integrates a number of different projects on this subject and supports close co-operation with institutions not belonging to the University. Activities include the organisation of conferences and the establishment of contacts with institutes and scientists. ... [Information of the supplier]
“forestknowledge.net” is a website run by forestry experts for forestry experts. We provide guaranteed quality, up-to-date information on forests, man and forest management. “forestknowledge.net” provides condensed, edited information on a wide range of topics regarding both forests and forestry in plain language.“forestknowledge.net” links research institutions, forest managers, forest owner associations and other non-governmental organisations to each other and provides access to experts. The editorial staff of the respective research institutes is responsible for the text content in “forestknowledge.net”. Each editorial office compiles expert information, edits it and then presents it on the web-portal. So called expert advisory boards, which are composed of at least two scientists, depending on the subject, guarantee the quality of the contributions. ... [Information of the supplier]
The National Forest Inventory - NFI (Bundeswaldinventur; BWI) is a large-scale survey of forest status and forest production potential conducted on a random basis and using a uniform procedure for the entire territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. The inventory can be repeated as required. The website provides information about the inventory results of the second survey from 2001 to 2002 and the first survey from 1986 to 1989 as well as about the aims and methods of the inventory. It also contains the results of the Projection modelling of forest development and timber harvesting potential, an assessment of the potential roundwood availability and related potential forest development over the next 40 years based on the National Forest Inventory results and assumed forest management activities. ... The Center for International Forestry Research is a nonprofit, global facility dedicated to advancing human wellbeing, environmental conservation and equity. We conduct research that enables more informed and equitable decision making about the use and management of forests in less-developed countries. Our research and expert analysis help policy makers and practitioners shape effective policy, improve the management of tropical forests and address the needs and perspectives of people who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Our multidisciplinary approach considers the underlying drivers of deforestation and degradation which often lie outside the forestry sector: forces such as agriculture, infrastructure development, trade and investment policies and law enforcement. ... The European Forest Institute is the leading forest research network in Europe. It is an international organisation established by European States. EFI conducts research and provides policy advice on forest related issues. Further, it facilitates and stimulates forest related networking as well as promotes the supply of unbiased and policy relevant information on forests and forestry. It also advocates for forest research and for scientifically sound information as a basis for policy-making on forests. All these activities are done either at the pan-European level or the work is of European relevance and they are carried out by both the Institute’s HQ and Regional Offices. The Headquarters’ research units are: a) Sustainability and Climate Change b) Policy and Governance c) Foresight and Information EFI’s work in the field of policy advice includes enhanced support for decision takers and policy makers. It has a strong policy advice role by hosting the EU FLEGT Facility which supports the EU Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) process in developing countries, related to the implementation of the EU FLEGT Action Plan. EU FLEGT Facility assists the European Commission and the EU Member States in their joint efforts of its implementation. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
The protection and sustainable development of forests – especially in the tropical and boreal zone – are a central issue of international environmental and forest policy, particular with regard to forest degradation and deterioration caused by land-use dynamics, climate change, air pollution and non-sustainable management practices. The Institute for World Forestry provides scientific contributions to close major knowledge gaps with respect to the interdependency of ecological processes, environmental impacts and forest utilisation, to develop strategies for sustainable forest management, and to provide scientifically sound support for political decision processes. The activities of the institute are focusing on the international context. ... [Information of the supplier]
In addition to the theme of the conference “Sustaining humans and forests in changing landscapes”, a wide range of topics in relation to forest landscape is proposed: Ecosystem functions and services in changing landscapes, Forest landscape restoration, Climate change impacts and mitigation, Biodiversity conservation and management in forest landscapes, Spatial patterns and ecological proceses, Agents, socioeconomic connections and policy making proceses, Urban landscapes and land use planning. IUFRO LE WG continues to integrare knowledge and experiences for the sustainability of forest landscapes based on landscape ecology principles. Attendees are invited to provide scientific and practical advances for the addressing conference theme and topics. ... [Information of the supplier]

The International Cooperative Programme (ICP) on Modelling and Mapping of Critical Loads & Levels and Air Pollution Effects, Risks and Trends works under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The objectives of the ICP Modelling and Mapping are to (a) determine receptor specific critical loads for indirect effects of the (long-term) deposition of various air pollutants, and critical levels for direct effects of gaseous air pollutants; (b) map pollutant depositions and concentrations which exceed critical thresholds. ...
