The Forest Ecosystems Research Center (Forschungszentrum Waldökosysteme or FZW) is part of the Forest Faculty of the University of Göttingen and carries out research into structural dynamics and element recycling processes in sylvan ecosystems as well as into the adaptability of forests in the face of environmental change. This includes study of the interaction between the ecosystems and their environment and the new types of forest damage. Last not least, these investigations also lead to an appraisal of commercial feasibility. The aim is to find out under which conditions sustainable forest management is possible. These conditions include natural factors such as climate and soil development as well as human factors such as the use of biomass and atmospheric pollution. Thus the Research Center studies the effects of atmospheric element deposition and forest management on sylvan ecosystems as well as the effects element outflow has on the environment of these ecosystems. An analysis of cause and effect is a condition for establishing critical loads and taking suitable measures for the stabilisation of sylvan ecosystems. Only in this way can detrimental environmental effects - such as on ground water - be avoided and sustainable forest management implemented. The Forest Ecosystems Research Center co-ordinates and integrates a number of different projects on this subject and supports close co-operation with institutions not belonging to the University. Activities include the organisation of conferences and the establishment of contacts with institutes and scientists. ... [Information of the supplier]
“forestknowledge.net” is a website run by forestry experts for forestry experts. We provide guaranteed quality, up-to-date information on forests, man and forest management. “forestknowledge.net” provides condensed, edited information on a wide range of topics regarding both forests and forestry in plain language.“forestknowledge.net” links research institutions, forest managers, forest owner associations and other non-governmental organisations to each other and provides access to experts. The editorial staff of the respective research institutes is responsible for the text content in “forestknowledge.net”. Each editorial office compiles expert information, edits it and then presents it on the web-portal. So called expert advisory boards, which are composed of at least two scientists, depending on the subject, guarantee the quality of the contributions. ... [Information of the supplier]
"Let nature be nature!" is the philosophy of the Bavarian Forest National Park. Nowhere else between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ural Mountains is such a large area of forests and moors allowed to grow and develop without the interference of man, into a unique landscape of primeval forest, a true “wilderness”. The Bavarian Forest National Park was Germany's first national park, inaugurated on 7th October 1970. On 1st August 1997 the national park was extended by an area of 11,000 hectares towards Bayerisch Eisenstein. Covering an area of 24,000 hectares, it is Germany's largest forested national park. ... If all the books in the world were to be digitised, some contemporaries believe the horticultural library (Bücherei des deutschen Gartenbaus, Potsdam) would be superfluous, as all books would be on the Internet. We do not believe that it will come to that. However, various institutions worldwide have begun to digitise historial literature and make it available on the Internet. Among them is, already, a good number of horticultural books. A specific title can be easily found on the Internet. It is difficult, however, to find an overview of digitised horticultural literature. As the few horticultural books are lost in the flood of other books, we found it useful to filter them out for quick retrieval. Botanical, architectural, literary and sivicultural works are selected for inclusion. Works that are plain text and not scans are not included. ... [Information of the supplier, translated]
This web site provides information about the silvicultural problem of the Black Cherry tree in the Berlin forests and its control, especially biological control with the endemic Silverleaf fungus (Chondrostereum purpureum). Since its introduction in the first half of the last century, the Black Cherry quickly became a problem species. Since the 1980s the Berliner Forsten has been making great efforts to reduce its numbers. Although there are a number of success stories in individual districts, the overall situation is still problematic. Drastic reductions in machinery and manpower have limited the opportunities for work in this area. Standing on approximately one third of the total Berlin forest area of 29,000 ha, this neophyte is, next to damage by game, the biggest problem for the structure of the forest. The aim of changing the mono-culture pine forest is difficult in these particular affected areas. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
BIOTREE (BIOdiversity and ecosystem processes in experimental TREE stands) is a long term, manipulative experiment on the role of tree diversity for ecosystem functioning of temperate forests. To our knowledge, the BIOTREE experiment is unique in its size and experimental design, adding value to existing or recently established forest diversity experiments in Finland, Panama and Borneo. ... FOREST EUROPE (The Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe) is the pan-European policy process for the sustainable management of the continent’s forests. FOREST EUROPE develops common strategies for its 46 member countries and the European Union on how to protect and sustainably manage forests. Founded in 1990, the continuous co-operation of FOREST EUROPE has led to achievements such as the guidelines and criteria for sustainable forest management. The collaboration of the ministers responsible for forests in Europe has been of great economic, environmental and social importance on the national and international level. High-priority topics of FOREST EUROPE are to strengthen the role of forests in mitigating climate change, secure the supply of good-quality fresh water, enhance and preserve forest biodiversity and provide forest products. Other important tasks are to develop a framework for future forest collaboration and to explore the possibilities for a legally binding agreement on forests in Europe. Several countries outside Europe and international, non-governmental and private sector organisations participate as observers. FOREST EUROPE is linked to global and other regional processes and initiatives dealing with issues of highest political and social relevance related to forests. ... [Information of the supplier]
The Vegetation of the westerly exposed downward slopes of the Amanos Mtn. between Osmaniye and Dörtyol is dominated by Euro-Siberian floral elements of Euxinian origin in the montane belt. This type of vegetation reminds especially of south-european forest vegetation. Nearly 100% of the determined Euro-Siberian elements are identical with species of the Pontos Mtn. Black Sea region and the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. In literature mentioning the flora and vegetation of the Amanos Mtn., the exceptional high portion of endemics have been emphasized. ... ... [Information of the supplier]
