Phagocytes—of which the macrophage is the prototypical cell but which also include a variety of other cell types such as microglia, dendritic cells, fibroblasts, and osteoclasts—play a broad role in host homeostasis in addition to host defense. Their roles include underappreciated functions in development and aging, tissue remodeling during morphogenesis, repair, and malignancy. 2016 marks the centenary of the death of Elie Metchnikoff, the Russian scientist who first discovered phagocytes. Our view of mitochondria is rapidly transforming. Recent advances in animal models, systems-based approaches, and imaging techniques have revealed that mitochondria have diverse functions beyond bioenergetics and biosynthesis. Their functions are linked to their surprisingly dynamic behavior, as mitochondria adapt and respond to a plethora of cellular and tissue-specific organismal needs. Given that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with metabolic disorders, cancer, and neurodegeneration, there ... [Information of the supplier]

We present a neural network based method (ChloroP) for identifying chloroplast transit peptides and their cleavage sites. Using cross-validation, 88% of the sequences in our homology reduced training set were correctly classified as transit peptides or nontransit peptides. This performance level is well above that of the so far only publicly available chloroplast localization predictor PSORT. Cleavage sites are predicted using a scoring matrix derived by an automatic motif-finding algorithm. Approximately ... [Information of the supplier]

[Miscellaneous as indicated]

The DSMZ - Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH (German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures) is the most comprehensive Biological Resource Centre in Europe.
With more than 14 000 microorganisms, 900 plant viruses, 550 human and animal cell lines, 500 plant cell cultures and more than 6 300 cultures deposited for the purposes of patenting, we have demonstrated our obligation to serve science for decades. The DSMZ is an independent, non-profit organisation.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory is a non-profit organisation and a basic research institute funded by public research monies from 18 member states. Research at EMBL is conducted by approximately 80 independent groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology. The cornerstones of EMBL's mission are: to perform basic research in molecular biology, to train scientists, students and visitors at all levels, to offer vital services to scientists in the member states, and to develop new instruments ... The aim of this conference series is to gather established and young researchers from all over the world who have substantially contributed to the microtubule field in recent years to generate an integrative perspective that assembles different scientific approaches around the microtubule field. To keep the conference series highly dynamic and attractive, we have added new scientific topics to the 2014 programme and invited almost exclusively scientists who did not speak at the first two conferences ... The symposium aims at bringing together world-leading experts in the fields of mechanobiology, cell biology and developmental biology studying the mechanical basis of cell and tissue morphogenesis. Particular emphasis will be given to quantitative approaches analysing how force production, transduction and reception drive cell and tissue morphogenesis from the molecular scale to the organismal scale. The field is currently expanding rapidly and we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of both experimental ... [Information of the supplier]
