Der Ort Staßfurt (Sachsen-Anhalt) weist bedeutende Binnensalzstellen auf. Hier fand auch die weltweit erste Kalisalzgewinnung statt. Vor allem aufgrund der Binnensalzstellen findet sich hier eine bemerkenswerte Flora und Fauna. Die Erfassung, Analyse und Dokumentation dieser Lebensräume und ihrer Bewohner war das erklärte Ziel der 1971 gegründeten Fachgruppe Faunistik und Ökologie.
