Der Grundstein für die naturkundliche Sammlung im Mauritianum wurde 1817 mit der Gründung der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft des Osterlandes zu Altenburg gelegt.
Nach 100 jähriger Sammlungstätigkeit wurde 1908 eigens für diese Sammlung ein Museum im Altenburger Schlosspark erbaut, das zu Ehren des naturverbundenen Präsidenten der Gesellschaft Prinz Moritz von Sachsen-Altenburg (Moritz = lat. mauritius) den Namen "Mauritianum" erhielt. Der Naturwissenschaftliche Verein Osnabrück (NVO) wurde 1870 gegründet. Zu den Zielen gehörten u.a.: (a) Anlegen einer wissenschaftlichen Belegsammlung aus dem Großraum Osnabrück, (b) Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Geologie und Biologie im heimatlichen Bereich, (c) Darstellung der Forschungsergebnisse, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Aufbau und Betreuen einer Schausammlung. 1988 wurde die Sammlung im Museum am Schölerberg zeitgerecht neu präsentiert.
