In Cooperation with the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology, the Library of the University of Heidelberg has digitalized selected anatomical literature and lithographs from the 19th century. This includes textbooks, scripts and drawings which described the teaching and research of this period, and has provided a unique insight into the work and history of the Institute. The oldest textbooks that have been digitalized were written by Jacob Fidelis Ackermann (*1765 †1815). The public was made aware of his presence from the beginning of his tenure in Heidelberg because he attempted, often with little success, to rebut the phrenological theses of Franz Josef Galls (*1758 †1828). Most of the anatomical drawings are lithographs by anatomists who worked in Heidelberg during their scientific career. Many of these very artistic lithographs originated in Heidelberg. Indeed Friedrich Tiedemann (*1781 †1861) dissected innumerable human and zoological cadavers during his tenure in Heidelberg, which he used to write his book “Tabulae Anatomicae”. Unfortunately, the work of Vincent Fohmann (*1794 †1837) concerning the “Saugadersystem”, today known as the lymphatic system, has been for all practical purposes forgotten. He was however well known outside of Germany for his uncomparable detailed mercury injections of specimens. Other authors include the Anatomists Friedrich Arnold (*1803 †1890), Carl Gegenbaur (*1826 †1903), and Alexander Ecker (*1816 †1887). ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
Whether in whole volume allegorical bestiaries, a bestiary chapter in Brunetto Latini's Le Livre du Trésor, satirical roles played in the Roman de Renard or Roman de Fauvel, their symbolism and terminology in the cynegetic literature of Le Livre de Chasse, or in vernacular translations of Esop's Fables, animals were prominent in medieval literature. Manuscripts for these are often rich in illustrations, a wealth of images which can be previewed through Google images of the Livre de chasse, the Bestiaire médiéval, the Roman de Renart, the Roman de Fauvel, and the Livre du Trésor. This page, devoted to the vernacular representation of animal lore in the French Middle Ages, is part of the Andy Holt Virtual Library's "Manuscripts of Medieval France with Vernacular Texts", a collection of over 800 links to manuscript facsimiles and nearly all of the French medieval literarary canon. ... Our objective is to provide free access for all scientists to the old zoological literature, particularly to those important publications where name-bearing zoological taxa were originally described. The literature is digitized in image format by the SUB Göttingen (our university library). In a first 2-year period (2003-2005) financed by the DFG we have digitized nearly all taxonomically relevant zoological literature from the beginnings until 1770 (about 400 works). Only some 5 % of the literature is not present in Göttingen and we are currently trying to obtain some works from other libraries. In a second 2-year-period we will try to cover the period from 1770 to 1800. Monographic works and journal articles shall both be digitized. The AnimalBase database is primarily established to link the old literature with the names of the animals described therein. We have continuously gone through the old works, from 1757 onwards, and entered all correctly described new animal names (genera and species taxa) by hand according to a standard established by our working group. (...) AnimalBase is a service provided by the University of Göttingen, Germany. Our work is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG. This page is under construction and we apologize for things not yet working perfectly. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]

The University of Pittsburgh is fortunate to own one of the rare, complete sets of John James Audubon’s Birds of America. It is considered to be the single most valuable set of volumes in the collections of the University Library System (ULS). Indeed, only 120 complete sets are known to exist. While Audubon was creating Birds of America, he was also working on a companion publication, namely, his Ornithological Biography. Both of these sets were acquired by William M. Darlington in the mid-nineteenth century and later donated, as part of his extensive library, to the University of Pittsburgh. Recognizing that the Darlington Library includes significant historical materials, such as rare books, maps, atlases, illustrations, and manuscripts, the ULS charted an ambitious course to digitize a large portion of Mr. Darlington’s collection, including the Birds of America. We are pleased to present our complete double elephant folio set of Audubon’s Birds of America, accompanied by his Ornithological Biography, through this Web site. Together these sets comprise an unprecedented online combination. ... [Information of the supplier]
