The Zoological Institute is one of the oldest scientific institutions in St. Petersburg. In 2007 the institute became 175 years old although history of establishment of collections at the institute and the museum began much earlier, i.e. since the time of Peter the Great, who purchased exhibits for the Kunstkammer, the first Russian museum established by him in 1714. The first museum catalogue (1742) lists approximately 4000 representatives of mammals, birds, amphibians, fishes, insects and invertebrates, deposited in scientific collections of the Kunstkammer. The 18th century was the age of great expeditions including the famous academic expeditions of P.S. Pallas in the southern regions of Russia and Siberia. Extensive material collected during numerous marine and land expeditions of the early 19th century filled depository of the Kunstkammer. The official opening of the Zoological Museum took place in July 1832, which is accepted as the time of its foundation. Later the museum was transformed into the Zoological Museum of the Academy of Sciences. Its scientific collections comprise approximately 60,000,000 items. The Laboratory of Arthropods, Palaeontological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences is dedicated to research on to fossil insects (Palaeoentomology). Fossil insect studies in Russia started just before the establishment of the Palaeontological Institute. They were initiated by a renowned entomologist A.V. Martynov (1879-1938), who became a founder of the Laboratory of Entomology in this Institute. During the years of its existence, the Laboratory of Arthropods accumulated the most extensive collection of fossil insects and arachnids comprising approximately 200,000 specimens and being one of the best collections in the World. ... The Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde was founded 1791 and covers zoology, botany and palaeontology. Original, the collection base on the ducal collection of Baden-Wuerttemberg, which dates back to the 16th century. Over the centuries the collections grew and it still due. It comprises many different objects (e. g. more than four million fossils and insects) and is consult by several international specialists. Since 1985 the museum consist of two locations, the Museum am Löwentor and the Schloss Rosenstein. Most of the palaeontological collection is host in the Museum am Löwentor, furthermore most scientific collections are stored here. The Schloss Rosentein serves as exhibition area for aspects of the natural history. Four divisions (botany, entomology, palaeontology and zoology) conduct research on those four fields. Their results and studies of other researchers are published in the own journals (e. g. Stuttgarter Beiträge zur Naturkunde A, B and C).
