In the Palearctic, Nearctic and Oriental regions, primary habitats for birds are diminishing at rates that are often severe and increasing. Thousands of insect species are believed to have become extinct before they have been described, putting many hundreds of bird species at risk as one of their primary food sources reduces. However, it is likely that the more subtle effects of removing insect species from complex ecosystems, especially the forced changes to the food chains, few of which have been studied at all, will have severe and unpredictable effects in the longer term. Die Vegetation der Westabdachung des Amanos zwischen Osmaniye und Dörtyol wird in der montanen Stufe von Euro-Sibirischen Florenelementen Euxinischer Provenienz dominiert und erinnert an südosteuropäische Waldformationen. Dabei handelt es sich mit weit über 90% um Taxa, die auch an der Nordabdachung des Pontischen Gebirges und auf dem mittleren Balkan angetroffen werden. In der Literatur wurde bisher der außergewöhnlich hohe Endemitenanteil hervorgehoben. Die Ursachen für das großflächige Auftreten der extrazonalen Vegetation waren bis zur Durchführung des hier vorgestellten Forschungsprojektes LöKAT unbekannt! Bisherige Vermutungen reichen von mesophilen spättertiären Relikten (vgl. Harald Kürschner 1984, p. 91) bis frühpostglazialen Einwanderungen (vgl. Peter Davis 1971 ). Allgemein wird eine zyklonal bedingte Niederschlagsbegünstigung der Westabdachung des Amanos vom Spätsommer bis Spätfrühling angenommen. Wegen des außergewöhnlich großflächigen Vorkommens wiesen Mayer & Aksoy (1986) jedoch auf den wenig ausgeprägten reliktischen Charakter dieser Euxinischen Vegetation hin. Mittelmontane Wälder oberhalb Dörtyol werden vor allem von Quercus cerris (Zerreiche) und Carpinus orientalis (Orientalische Weißbuche) und hochmontane bis zur Waldgrenze von Fagus orientalis (Orient-Buche) gebildet. Innermontan steigt die Orientbuche über Sandstein bis unter 400 m ü.NN hinab. In der mittleren collinen Stufe dominiert die Zerreiche oft unterPinus brutia und ist tiefcollin auf Schatthängen zusammen mit der orientalischen Hainbuche noch sehr häufig. Die umfangreichsten vegetationsökologischen Untersuchungen im Amanos wurden bisher von Yildirim Akman durchgeführt und 1973 publiziert. Das Projekt in der SO-Türkei (Amanos) ist ein interdisziplinäres Projekt zu den Ursachen und zur Diversität temperater extrazonaler Flora und Vegetation, und wird von folgenden Disziplinen durchgeführt: Ökosystemforschung u.
