The “Yeast Lipid Conference” (YLC) is an international scientific meeting held every second year (typically in late May) to promote free discussion between scientists working on or interested in all aspects of yeast lipids. The 12th edition of YLC will be held in Ghent, Belgium from the 20th till the 22nd of May 2015. It will start on Wednesday afternoon with registration followed by the opening lecture, and an evening reception. The following two days will be seminars by invited guests with some speakers chosen from submitted abstracts, poster sessions, and social events. This is the first time the conference will be hosted in Belgium and we are pleased that Ghent will be the location for this. The EMBO conference ‘The nitrogen nutrition of plants - Nitrogen2016’ will be the third international symposium on the nitrogen nutrition of plants, following Nitrogen2013 in Puerto Varas (Chile) and Nitrogen2010 in Inuyama-city (Japan) and the founder meeting Nitrogen2007 in Lancaster (UK). The human genome seems to encode for not more than 30,000 to 40,000 proteins. A major challenge is to understand how posttranslational events, such as glycosylation, affect the activities and functions of these proteins in health and disease. Sequencing of the human genome has opened the way and provided the impetus for building a comprehensive picture of a mammalian cell. Significant efforts are underway in the fields of genomics and proteomics to identify all genes and proteins in a given organism. The goal is a complete map of the genes, gene products and their interaction networks in a functioning cell. The next step in establishing a comprehensive picture of a cell will be to tie the cell's metabolome into the rapidly developing genomic and proteomic maps. A cell's metabolome, however, is such an enormous and complex entity that characterizing it can only be approached in sections. This consortium is now proposing to focus on the lipid section of the metabolome by developing an integrated metabolomic system capable of characterizing the global changes in lipid metabolites ("lipidomics").
