Applications of conservation genetics, both in science and practice, are ever increasing. The ongoing revolution in molecular methodology opens up new possibilities for conservation genetic research. At the same time, conservation management is increasingly using genetic approaches for various practical applications, such as diagnosis, population size estimation, mating patterns and inbreeding, gene flow, fragmentation, connectivity, hybridization, adaptation and genetic monitoring. While in English-speaking countries several recurrent meetings exist that allow researchers and managers to exchange results and discuss new ideas on conservation genetics, no such platform exists in Central Europe. The aim of the Annual Meetings in Conservation Genetics is thus to bring together scientists and managers from Central Europe (mainly Germany, Austria and Switzerland) working on conservation genetics. We invite all scientists, postdocs, PhD students, Master students and, especially, conservation practitioners interested in conservation genetics to attend and contribute to the 1st Annual Meeting in Conservation Genetics taking place in Birmensdorf / Zürich, Switzerland. In the following years, the annual meeting will be hosted by different institutions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Conference objectives: (1) Inform researchers and managers on exciting conservation genetic research and emerging new developments, with a focus on Central Europe, (2) Provide a platform for personal exchange for scientists, students and managers interested in conservation genetics (including an extended poster session), (3) Establish a network for researchers in conservation genetics in Central Europe, (4) Present keynotes given by prominent scientists from within the European conservation genetic community. ... The 6th Global Botanic Gardens Congress of Botanic Gardens Conservation International - "Botanic gardens in society: visions for the future" - will be hosted by the Conservatory and Botanical Garden of the City of Geneva, Switzerland, from the 26th-30th June 2017. With the aim of stimulating discussion and innovative reflections on the role and relevance of botanic gardens in society, we would like to cordially invite you to the 6th Global Botanic Gardens Congress in 2017. The scientific programme will focus on botanic gardens’ role in solving the major environmental challenges for society – food security, water scarcity, energy, health, loss of biodiversity and climate change. Major topics will include plant conservation, education and outreach, botanic garden management challenges and communicating the big issues via landscaping, with workshops and discussion sessions organised during the course of the meeting to address specific issues. ... This conference provides a forum for curators and developers of biological databases to discuss their work, promote collaboration and foster a sense of community in this very active and growing area of research. In 2016 it is hosted by the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. The conference will include four plenary talks featuring established scientists who have influenced the field of biocuration. The plenary speakers are Theodora Bloom, Donna Maglott, Melissa Haendel and Edward Marcotte. ... [Information of the supplier]
We live on a blue planet. Yet freshwater makes up only 3 % of all water on earth, 2 % of which is locked up in snow and ice, leaving just 1 % for all of us to use. The availability of clean freshwater is vital for life, humans and nature alike. UNEP estimates, however, that by 2025 two out of three people will live in water stressed areas. Yet other parts of the world will be subject to increased flood risks. Nature in rivers, lakes and wetlands is equally dependent on ample, clean freshwater. Changes in the global water cycle instigated by changes in precipitation snow and ice-melt, which are part of global changes in climate, will enhance the uncertainty in the availability of freshwater in the (near) future. Moreover, freshwater systems are under extreme pressure from modification, over-exploitation, eutrophication and pollution. This is a threat to the extraordinary level of biodiversity these systems maintain. Other important services freshwater systems provide are the provision of drinking water, irrigation, fisheries and recreation. These services can only be maintained if the freshwater ecosystems maintain their resilience under stress. The functioning and resilience of ecosystems is strongly dependent on the level of biodiversity. What emerges is that various global crises – loss of biodiversity, climate change and water scarcity – interact and may strengthen each other. All of this requires much better governance of the increasingly limited water supplies as well as proper management of water quantity, quality and aquatic biodiversity. For this freshwater sciences are indispensable. It has been 100 years since François Alphonse Forel passed away. Forel, the founder of Limnology, lived and worked in the Lake Geneva area and published his major work on this lake “Le Leman” between 1892 and 1902. One could say that by hosting SEFS in Geneva in 2015 freshwater sciences are coming home. A time to commemorate more than a century of freshwater studies, but above all a time to look ahead, since in the 21st century freshwater sciences are needed more than ever before. ...
