The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists from around the world. On more than 3000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about the diversity of organisms on Earth, their evolutionary history (phylogeny), and characteristics. Each page contains information about a particular group of organisms (e.g., echinoderms, tyrannosaurs, phlox flowers, cephalopods, club fungi, or the salamanderfish of Western Australia). The aim of this site is on one hand to facilitate the work of researchers and members of the public who attempt to sort the common names of plants and associate them with their corresponding botanical names. On the other hand this site aims at building the growing number of multilingual and multiscripted resources on the internet with the ultimate goals of improving international communication, improving communication between lay people and scientists and linking people with a common interest in plants, ethnic food and horticulture. We thereby hope to raise the awareness among both academics and lay people of the great world diversity of plants that could be used by people as opposed to the limited range of plants used and commercialised. GNI has been developed by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and the Encyclopedia of Life. Die Idee zu dem Wiki Hortipendium ist im Fachausschuss Gartenbau im Verband der Landwirtschaftskammern entstanden. Zielrichtung ist die Schaffung eines internetbasierten Nachschlagewerkes für die gärtnerischen Berufe und den Freizeitgartenbau in Form einer Enzyklopädie. Dieses Lexikon soll das Grundlagenwissen zu den Themen Anbau, Produktion, Technik, Dienstleistung, Handel, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft sowie Politik und Recht vermitteln, in einen Zusammenhang stellen und erklären. Das System ist vergleichbar mit der Freien Enzyklopädie Wikipedia. Dabei kann Hortipendium auf allen Stufen der gartenbaulichen Ausbildung als Nachschlagewerk dienen und soll ein zentraler Anlaufpunkt für die einzelnen Fachgebiete des Gartenbaus, der Gartenbauvereine und der Freizeitgärtner sein. Hortipendium ist ein weiteres Informationsangebot im Wissens-Netzwerk hortigate.
