Our goal is to provide a flexible query tool to access information on Hawaiian vascular plants from a taxonomic or geographical perspective at a variety of levels of detail. Queries can result in a simple checklist with island distribution to information on names, types, identifying characteristics, and images (illustrations and photographs). Currently, the available databases can supply checklists of Hawaiian flora and type information for names based on Hawaiian collections. Information is presented in a thematic way, so that users focused on particular components of the State’s flora, such as the conservation taxa or naturalised weeds can readily keep up to date. FloraWeb is the online offering of the Federal Agency for Nature Protection (BfN) concerning wild plant species, plant communities, and the natural vegetation of Germany. At present the species selection is restricted to ferns and flowering plants (phanerogams), the extension to mosses (bryophytes) is planned. The entries come from current, actualised databases and projects of the BfN and its co-operating partners (see below) and thus are available to the public in their current form. Under the menu point “Plant species” ("Pflanzenarten") ca. 3500 species profiles with up to 55 individual items of information about taxonomy, biology, ecology, habitat, distribution, and inventory situation, endangerment and protection, as well as photos, can be accessed that are generated at the current time by means of dynamic accessing the underlying databases. The species descriptions can be accessed by name, by alphabetical name lists, or a systematic family tree. Information about distributions in Germany is available through dynamically prepared maps and the interactive GIS application FloraMap. In the sub-menu point “Properties” ("Suche nach Eigenschaften") all individual information items in searches can be freely combined. Again, the resulting species lists can be transferred to the map module FloraMap where one then has the possibility of displaying the spatial distribution of these groups of species in Germany. Under the menu point “Associations” ("Gesellschaften"), the likewise collected information about plant communities and their regional endangerment in Germany is stored in the profiles. These profiles of the vegetation units are extended through a database of phytosociological records under the name “VegetWeb”, which is to be continuously expanded. Under the menu point “Vegetation map” the units of the potential natural vegetation of Germany are displayed in profiles, with text explanations and photos, that will be expanded through the map display dynamically linked to the profiles. The MBLWHOI Library Herbarium (SPWH), formerly the Marine Biological Laboratory Herbarium, documents the flora of Cape Cod, Massachusetts and adjacent islands. The collection, dating back to the 1850's, consists of approximately 7,000 vascular and 2,000 non-vascular plant specimens. The non-vascular collection consists primarily of marine algae of Cape Cod and the Islands. This database contains 1834 plant species which are, or were, present in the Karlsruhe administration district, and some neighbouring regions. About 1750 of them are illustrated; the pictures show various aspects of the plants (flowers, fruits, habit, etc.). In almost all cases these are digital photos that were specially made for the database from 2001 to 2005. Wherever possible pictures of regional populations in the Karlsruhe area were used. The first version of this database was published as a CD-ROM ("Die Pflanzenwelt des nördlichen Landkreises Karlsruhe", M. Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794-1868) was one of the most famous naturalists of the nineteenth century. From 1817 to 1821 he explored Brazil, with the zoologist Spix. During that period he collected more than 10,000 herbarium specimens that are now housed in the Botanische Staatssammlung, Muenchen, Germany. Importantly, von Martius' trip was the first to inspire academic interest in Brazil's rich flora. Martius quickly became an expert on palms and published three volumes of the Historia Naturalis Palmarum between 1823 and 1850. Additionally, he co-founded, with Endlicher, the magnificent Flora Brasiliensis, a monographical flora series. During his life time 46 fascicles were published, the remaining were completed later by Eichler and Urban in 1906 making a total of 130 volumes. Von Martius' private botanical collection grew, by purchase and exchange, to become one of the most important private herbaria of the nineteenth century. When he died, it contained ca. 300,000 specimens representing 65,000 species from all over the world. Approximately half of them came from the Amazon Basin. The Herbarium Martii was acquired by the Belgian government in 1870 and formed the beginning of a world collection for the then newly established Jardin botanique de l'Etat. The entire archive, with detailed lists for many of von Martius' acquisitions, is now conserved in the National Botanic Garden of Belgium. In this age of advancing technology it is possible to make species information and herbarium material more available to the academic community by placing it on the Internet. The project 'Prototype Image Server to Integrate the Martius' Herbarium and the Digital Flora Brasiliensis' aims to do just this. It represents an inter-institutional feasibility study within Work Package 13 of the European Network for Biodiversity Information. Initially this project focuses on eight pilot groups. From these groups, all historical type specimens of Brazilian taxa have been imaged and databased along with the texts and plates of the Flora Brasiliensis.
