A considerable number of interdisciplinary researches have been developed at the interface between hydrology and ecology during the last decade. The increasing number of peer-reviewed papers on the topic demonstrates the vitality of this theme. This interest in coupling hydrological and ecological studies has been triggered by purely scientific questions related to the quantification of the role of interactions between hydrological and biological processes on surface and groundwater resources and quality, but also by the importance of these physical and biological interactions at small, local and regional scales. These scales are of paramount importance for applied environmental issues related to air and water quality or biodiversity dynamics for instance. FINS is the Freshwater Invasives – Networking for Strategy conference being hosted by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC). Essen liegt im Zentrum des Ruhrgebietes, einer der am dichtesten besiedelten Regionen Europas. Die Region war lange Zeit ein Synonym für massive Umweltverschmutzung. Der Himmel war grau, ebenso das Wasser in den Bächen und Flüssen. Heute gehört das Ruhrgebiet zu den grünsten Metropolen Deutschlands und ist zudem Schauplatz des weltweit größten Vorhabens zur naturnahen Umgestaltung eines Gewässers: dem Umbau des Emschersystems. Der Himmel ist wieder blau, ebenso wie das Wasser in den Bächen und Flüssen. „Wasser“ ist ein schnell wachsendes Schwerpunktthema der Universität Duisburg-Essen. Zwei technische, vier chemische und vier biologische Arbeitsgruppen haben wässerige Forschungsgebiete, weitere Arbeitsgruppen werden in den nächsten Jahren entstehen. Die meisten dieser Arbeitsgruppen betreiben angewandte Forschung in den Bereichen Biofilme, Ökotoxikologie und Ressourcenmanagement. Seit Jahren begleiten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler der Universität zudem die Umsetzung von Umweltschutzmaßnahmen und Rechtsnormen. Insofern ist es konsequent, dass die DGL-Tagung in Essen mit einem wichtigen Datum der europäischen Gewässerschutzpolitik zusammenfällt: der ersten Zielerreichungsfrist der Wasserrahmenrichtlinie für den guten ökologischen Zustand bzw. das gute ökologische Potenzial der Oberflächengewässer. Dieses Jubiläum -15 Jahre EG-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie- sollte ein Anlass für einen kritischen Rückblick und Ausblick sein: Wo stehen wir im Gewässerschutz? Was hat sich getan, was haben wir erreicht? Was haben wir (noch) nicht erreicht? Und was ist überhaupt erreichbar? Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Tagung, 25 Jahre nach der letzten DGL-Tagung in Essen, einen besonderen Schwerpunkt auf angewandte Themen legen—ohne jedoch Grundlagenthemen zu vernachlässigen. Wir wollen zudem dazu beitragen, die Verbindung der Anwender aus Behörden, Wasserwirtschaft und Unternehmen mit der DGL weiter zu stärken. Die Tagung wird daher in enger Kooperation mit den großen Wasserwirtschaftsverbänden in Essen ausgerichtet: Emschergenossenschaft, Lippeverband und Ruhrverband. Verschiedene Exkursionsangebote zu wasserwirtschaftlichen Maßnahmen, unter anderem zu einigen Großbaustellen der Gewässerentwicklung in Nordrhein-Westfalen, sollen die praktischen Aspekte des Gewässerschutzes anschaulich vor Augen führen.
