ALTBIB: Bibliography on Alternatives to the Use of Live Vertebrates in Biomedical Research and Testing - The intent of the bibliography is to assist in identifying methods and procedures helpful in supporting the development, testing, application, and validation of alternatives to the use of vertebrates in biomedical research and toxicology testing. This bibliography is produced from MEDLARS database searches, performed and analyzed by subject experts from the Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program (TEHIP) of the Specialized Information Services Division (SIS) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). ... The web site documents, and analyses current practice in animal experiments. The area “database” gives you access to information for almost 3000 published investigations carried out by scientists working in Germany and Austria (with biographic data and content details). Specialist journals, doctoral work, and post-doctoral qualification work are evaluated. ... [Editorial staff vifabio]
PubMed Central is a digital archive of life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), developed and managed by NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM). With PubMed Central, NLM is taking the lead in preserving and maintaining unrestricted access to the electronic literature, just as it has done for decades with the printed biomedical literature. PubMed Central aims to fill the role of a world class library in the digital age. It is not a journal publisher. NLM believes that giving all users free and unrestricted access to the material in PubMed Central is the best way to ensure the durability and utility of the archive as technology changes over time. ... The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) is a small, non-profit center. As part of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, we are dedicated to improving health for both people and animals. We promote humane science by supporting the creation, development, validation, and use of alternatives to animals in research, product safety testing, and education. We seek to effect change by working with scientists in industry, government, and academia to find new ways to replace animals with non-animal methods, reduce the numbers of animals necessary, or refine methods to make them less painful or stressful to the animals involved. ... Animal Diversity Web (ADW) is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology at the University of Michigan. Animal Diversity Web has: ¹ Thousands of species accounts about individual animal species. These may include text, pictures of living animals, photographs and movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text of these accounts and we cannot guarantee their accuracy. ¹ Descriptions of levels of organization above the species level, especially phyla, classes, and in some cases, orders and families. Hundreds of hyperlinked pages and images illustrate the traits and general biology of these groups. Professional biologists prepare this part. ... [Information of the supplier]
The Australian Faunal Directory (AFD) is being compiled as a public enquiry database and will serve as a source of taxonomic and biological information on all animal species known to occur in Australia. It incorporates the data from the terminated Zoological Catalogue of Australia database project. [Information of the supplier]
Metazome is a database and graphical user interface enabling comparative genomic studies within the Metazoa. As of version 1.1, the database houses eleven sequenced animal genomes and is constantly growing as new genomes become available. Each gene has been annotated with PFAM, KOG, and PANTHER assignments, and publicly available annotations from RefSeq, SwissProt, Ensembl, and JGI are hyper-linked and searchable. For comparative studies, various clustering methods have been applied to construct orthologous groups of genes that represent the modern descendents of ancestral gene sets at key phylogenetic nodes, including the ancestral tetrapod and vertebrate. These clusterings allow easy access to clade specific orthology/paralogy relationships as well as clade specific genes and gene expansions. Position specific profiles will be made available shortly and gene phylogenetic trees are available now for each cluster to enable deeper comparative studies. ... [Information of the supplier]
