Dryad is an international repository of data underlying peer-reviewed articles in the basic and applied biosciences. Dryad enables scientists to validate published findings, explore new analysis methodologies, repurpose data for research questions unanticipated by the original authors, and perform synthetic studies. The 21st Century is arguably the age of biosciences, and centre stage to this projection is the maturing of genomically powered approaches to all kinds of fundamental and applied questions. The next few decades will undoubtedly see a substantial increase in the number and diversity of species with sequenced genomes, as well as the exploration of variation of genomes across populations, different environments and over evolutionary time, and this will greatly empower integrative and comparative biosciences. The modularized Diversity Workbench (=DWB) represents a virtual research environment for multiple scientific purposes with regard to management and analysis of life sciences data. The framework is appropriate to store different kinds of bio- and geodiversity data and facilitates the processing of ecological, molecular biological, observational, collection and taxonomic data. It is capable and flexible enough to be applied as data storage unit for institutional data repositories. The DWB is set up on a xml-enabled relational database system. Clients of every database of the Workbench are used as stand-alone applications and provide supporting functions to clients of corresponding databases. This results in a high flexibility with regard to the conceptual design, enabling sophisticated user administration and a rapid setup of project-specific and user-adapted entry forms. Further, it facilitates the dynamic integration of web services and external data resources. The DWB is work in progress, aiming at developing a set of information models and application components that collaborate through agreed software interfaces. That is, each component of the Workbench applications uses services from other applications, but at the same time does not need to know about the internal design and implementation of them (encapsulation principle). BioCreative: Critical Assessment of Information Extraction in Biology is a community-wide effort for evaluating text mining and information extraction systems applied to the biological domain. Built on the success of the previous BioCreative Challenge Evaluations and Workshops (BioCreative I, II, II.5, III, 2012 workshop, and IV) the BioCreative Organizing Committee will host the BioCreative V Challenge in Sevilla, Spain on September 9-11, 2015. One key goal of BioCreative is the active involvement of the text mining user community in the design of the tracks, preparation of corpus and the testing of interactive systems. For BioCreative V, the selection of the tracks has been driven in part by suggestions from the biocuration community, by our goal of addressing interoperability -- a major barrier to adoption to text mining tools --, and via an open call for tasks of interest to both the bioNLP and user communities. ...
