Genetic variation is a vital component of biodiversity, providing ecosystems, species, populations and individuals with the raw material to adapt and survive environmental change and enabling natural selection, as envisaged by Darwin 150 years ago, to operate. Genetic biodiversity has long been recognized by the Convention on Biological Diversity and the EU Biodiversity Strategy as one of the three essential elements of living diversity. Yet conserving genetic variation is poorly addressed in practice compared to the two other biodiversity components – species and ecosystems. In addition the link between science, policy and implementation needs a step-change if we are to help ‘future-proof’ essential components of our biodiversity against the anticipated global threats of the coming decades. There exists both a policy-based and capacity impediment to the optimal management of genetic biodiversity in the EU. ConGRESS aims to rectify the problem by delivering dissemination tools which policy makers and conservation managers can conveniently use to incorporate genetic biodiversity into their policy and management frameworks.ConGRESS will empower organizations to efficiently use genetics in conservation for the first time. ConGRESS aims to make genetic expertise, information and user-friendly tools available, beginning at the initial stages of a conservation program (study design and assessment), through to management decision-making and implementation and finally for policy development at a local and regional level. Researchers collect species occurrence data, records of an organism at a particular time in a particular place, as a primary or ancillary function of many biological field investigations. Presently, these data reside in numerous distributed systems and formats (including publications) and are consequently not being used to their full potential. As a step toward addressing this challenge, the Core Science Analytics and Synthesis (CSAS) program of the US Geological Survey (USGS) is developing Biodiversity Information Serving Our Nation (BISON), an integrated and permanent resource for biological occurrence data from the United States. BISON will leverage the accumulated human and infrastructural resources of the long-term USGS investment in research and information management and delivery. CSAS is also the U.S. Node of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), an international, government-initiated and funded effort focused on making biodiversity data freely available for scientific research, conservation and sustainable development. CSAS, with its partners at Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), hosts a full mirror of the hundreds of millions of global records to which GBIF provides access. This conference presents cutting edge research into the importance of polyploidy in genetics, evolution and ecology. It will be distinctive in its small group dynamics, wonderful location and great speakers. There will be three core sessions over two and a half days; these are: (1) the long-term and (2) immediate consequences of interspecific hybridization and polyploidy. These explore effects over deep time and shallower time frames and focus on genetics and epigenetics. The final core session will be: (3) polyploidy in light of ecological genetics. Here we discuss current data showing effects of hybridisation and polyploidy on phenotypes, niche occupation and ecology. Genomic tools are becoming essential in biological investigations that relate to agriculture, medicine, biotechnology and biodiversity science. Moreover, evolutionary concepts and an evolutionary genomics perspective are becoming central to interpret any new finding in these fields and develop forward approaches for problem solving. The potential of evolutionary genomics is unparalleled as it provides key insights into our understanding of many fundamental and applied questions such as the evolutionary history of life on earth and the molecular bases of adaptation of species in response to environmental changes in natural populations and crop improvement. However, the maturation of evolutionary thinking in these fields involving genomic approaches is an ongoing process and needs to be supported by initiatives that will update key analytical, conceptual and experimental innovations in evolutionary genomics. The objective of the proposed conference is to make such synthesis possible by bringing leaders in the field together to discuss their ongoing research and vision of where the field is moving over the coming years. Accordingly, we aim at fostering the link between functional and evolutionary perspectives towards an integrative approach of evolutionary genomics, and propose a conference with: two sessions on evolutionary systems biology and experimental evolution; one session on genome evolution; two sessions on theoretical and empirical population genomics. Because evolutionary genomics largely focuses on processes (how mutations arise and fix in populations) and systems biology on functions (how mutations are translated into phenotypes), we are convinced that this combination will allow to progress towards a better understanding of evolutionary processes and its applications.
