The literature database of the vegetation ecology of central Europe of the Braunschweig University Library is a current database in which scientific publications about the flora and vegetation of Central Europe are indexed. Until now, the focus has been on Germany; indexing of the relevant publications for Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy, and Slovenia is planned. The adjacent areas are also taken into consideration in the selection. Currently ca. 11000 publications have been indexed whereby the data are continually updated and expanded. A special feature of the database is that scientists who are active in this area can themselves enter records of their publications into the database via the World Wide Web. Die Deutsche Zoologische Gesellschaft hat als ersten Schritt zu einer vom Netzwerk der biologischen Stationen Deutschlands geplanten Homepage eine Liste der Stationen ins Netz gestellt. Diese soll eine Übersicht über die in Deutschland vorhandenen Stationen, ihr Angebot, ihre Kapazität und Nutzungsmöglichkeiten für Exkursionen und Kurse geben. Unter biologischen Stationen werden hier Feldstationen verstanden, die von Universitäten oder anderen öffentlichen Trägern mit wissenschaftlichem und technischem Personal betrieben werden und für die Durchführung von Exkursionen und Praktika von Studierenden verschiedener Universitäten sowie für biologische Kurse genutzt werden können. ... GBOL - German Barcode of Life: → Inventarisierung und genetische Charakterisierung der Tiere, Pflanzen und Pilze Deutschlands. Das GBOL-Projekt hat das Ziel die Artenvielfalt aller deutschen Tiere, Pilze und Pflanzen anhand ihres genetischen DNA-Barcodes (Fingerabdrucks) zu erfassen. Damit übernimmt Deutschland als Wissenschaftsnation eine führende Rolle in einem internationalen Konsortium aus Naturkundemuseen, Zoos, Herbarien, Forschungseinrichtungen und staatlichen Institutionen, die den Aufbau einer "DNA Barcode Bibliothek des Lebens" (pdf) zum Ziel haben. Bis heute sind weltweit ~1,5 Millionen DNA Barcodes von ~145.000 beschriebenen Arten in der BOLD Datenbank erfasst (Stand: Dez. 2011). GBOL ist ein deutschlandweites Netzwerk aus verschiedenen Naturkundemuseen und anderen Biodiversitätsforschungsinstituten. Die GBOL Partner stellen ihre professionelle taxonomische Expertise und ihre bereits existierende Infrastruktur (Sammlungen/Biobanken, Datenbanken, Bioinformatik-Plattformen und Labore) zur Verfügung, um umfassend und flächendeckend die Tier- und Pflanzenarten Deutschlands zu sammeln, zu katalogisieren, wissenschaftlich zu beschreiben, zu sequenzieren und in die globale Referenz-Barcode Datenbank „BOLD“ einzuspeisen. Die morphologische Artidentifikation wird zunächst durch spezialisierte Experten (Taxonomen) erfolgen, die ihr Wissen über die Morphologie, Ökologie, Reproduktionsmodus und Lebenszyklus bestimmter Taxa einbringen. Mit modernsten DNA Sequenziermethoden wird in einem zweiten Schritt der DNA Barcode entschlüsselt. Der Artensteckbrief wird mit dem DNA Barcode verknüpft und in einer öffentlich zugänglichen DNA Barcode Referenz-Datenbank verfügbar gemacht. Welcome to the 27th Conference of the Plant Population Biology Section (PopBio) of the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland (GfÖ), which will be held in Konstanz from 29th to 31st May 2014. PopBio is the annual international meeting for people working in the field of plant population biology and ecology. We will have two and a half days of exciting presentations. For those interested in visiting the largest nature reserve at the shore of Lake Constance, we also offer a half-day excursion to the local Wollmatinger Ried nature reserve. In 2014, the University of Hildesheim will host the 44th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The University of Bayreuth welcomes the International Biogeography Society for its 7th international conference. This modern research university has a major focus on ecological research housed in the Bayreuth Center for Ecology and Environmental Research (BayCEER). Novel concepts for research and teaching are established such as the Ecological-Botanical Gardens and the Global Change Ecology study program. The surroundings of Bayreuth are characterized by outstanding geological and climatic heterogeneity. Isolated fragments of natural ecosystems occur within a highly diverse cultural landscape. It was in the district of Bayreuth where Alexander von Humboldt, a leader in the early history of biogeography, gained his first experience in fieldwork after he finished his studies. At the end of the 18th century, before travelling the world, he worked as director of mining for the regional administration. Various places close to Bayreuth are linked to his scientific development. The conference will be marked by four plenary symposia, keynote lectures by the awardees of the society’s Alfred Russel Wallace Award and the MacArthur and Wilson Award, contributed paper sessions, and dynamic poster sessions over the lunch and evening.
