Das Biologicum Almtal ist eine jährliche Veranstaltung für die populäre Vermittlung biologischer Wissenschaft und ihrer internationalen Spitzenforschung. Wissenschaftlicher Leiter des Biologicum Almtal ist der Verhaltensbiologe Prof. Dr. Kurt Kotrschal. Es befasst sich als transdisziplinäres wissenschaftliches Symposium mit den zentralen Themen der modernen Biologie, immer mit dem Blick auf den Menschen. Das 1. Das Projekt "Datenbank der Pilze Österreichs" hat zum Ziel, das Vorkommen und die Verbreitung der Pilze in Österreich umfassend zu dokumentieren und die verfügbaren Daten darzustellen und auszuwerten. Das Projekt ist eine von der Österreichischen Mykologischen Gesellschaft koordinierte, österreichweite Kooperation zahlreicher Mykologen, Pilzfreunde und Institutionen, die Verbreitungsdaten von Pilzen erheben bzw. Sammlungen von Pilzbelegen halten. Die Online-Version der Datenbank bietet die Möglichkeit, die Verbreitungsbilder der über 7.700 Pilztaxa einzusehen und den aktuellen Datenstand mit über 370.000 Fundmeldungen abzurufen, die von über 12.000 verschiedenen Fundorten in ganz Österreich stammen. Jeder Datensatz beinhaltet neben möglichst exakten Orts- und Zeitangaben wichtige Informationen zu Lebensraum und Substrat der Pilznachweise, zur Bestimmung und wissenschaftlichen Dokumentation der Pilzfunde, sowie zur Herkunft und Quelle der gespeicherten Daten, das sind derzeit insgesamt über 6 Millionen Einzeldaten. Auf diesen Webseiten finden sich darüber hinaus zusammenfassende Auswertungen und grafische Darstellungen der in der Datenbank erfassten Parameter sowohl für die einzelnen Pilzarten ("Profile") als auch für räumliche Einheiten (Bundesländer, Gemeinden, Regionen, Rasterquadranten) bzw. für den gesamten Datenbestand. Sämtliche Datenlisten und Diagramme werden, so wie die Verbreitungsbilder und Verbreitungsdatensätze der Pilzarten, unmittelbar aus der Datenbank generiert. The "14th European Fusarium Seminar" will take place from April 8-11, 2018 in Tulln, Austria. It will be jointly organized by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) and the Austrian Association of Molecular Life Sciences and Biotechnology, in cooperation with the International Society of Mycotoxicology. The EFS14 will be an excellent opportunity to present and discuss the progress made in all fields related to Fusarium research, ranging from medical research to plant pathology and from mycotoxin research to mitigation strategies. Topics like molecular taxonomy and detection of plant and animal pathogens, climate change or crop related changes in the Fusarium species and chemotype spectrum will be covered. "Host resistance genomics, genetics and plant breeding" will deal with studies about host resistance mechanisms (QTL and association mapping, transcriptomics, etc.), while work with a focus on the chemistry of host-pathogen interaction will be covered in the session "Fusarium secondary metabolites and metabolomics of Fusarium-host plant interactions". The session "Fusarium mycotoxins: toxicology, metabolism and remediation" will present new insights into classical Fusarium mycotoxins and toxin metabolism, but also emerging compounds and interactions of Fusarium metabolites will be included. A strong focus will be on strategies to detoxify and utilize contaminated grain. The aim of this fifth HydroEco conference – after the four previous meetings, in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czech Republic in 2006, in Vienna in Austria in 2009 and 2011, and in Rennes in France in 2013 – is fourfold: i) to present new findings and approaches on interactions between hydrology and ecology, ii) to promote interdisciplinary interactions on water related issues between hydrology, hydrogeology, biogeochemistry, microbial ecology and ecology, iii) to explore advances in monitoring, modelling and predicting dynamics of hydroecological processes, and iv) to discuss management approaches and applications to tackle environmental issues, including engineering measures for ecosystem preservation and restoration of ecologically valuable environments.To address the relevant issues, the conference aims to bring together experts from different disciplines such as hydrologists (groundwater, surface water), ecologists, biologists, subsurface microbiologists, environmental biogeochemists, eco-technologists, geomorphologists, hydraulic engineers, forest managers, nature reserve managers, regional and landscape planners, as well as experts from governmental institutions.
