... The Association sees itself as a promoter of entomology and serves to protect endangered species and their habitats as well as to enable the mediation of friendly contact and an exchange of experiences between Association members with entomological questions. This is achieved through presentation evenings, group excursions, maintenance of an entomological library, identification exercises and help as well as guidance for photography and microscopy. Maintenance of entomological collections, practical conservation work and advice to conservation authorities on entomological questions are also among the range of tasks undertaken by the Entomological Association ORION Berlin. ... The department was established in 1862 and is one of the largest entomology collections in North America. It contains about 10,000,000 curated specimens, representing all orders, nearly all families, and approximately 250,000 species (Coleoptera (beetles), Embiidina (web spinners), Diptera (flies), Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps), Neuropteroida and Arachnida (spiders)). The Department of Entomology maintains two databases of the arthropod collections. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
The Essig Museum of Entomology is a part of a consortium of museums on the UC Berkeley campus, the Berkeley Natural History Museums. Since 1880 some famous entomologists (e.g. E.O. Essig, P.D. Hurd, J.A. Powell) built up Essig Museum and the collections of insects for teaching and research. In addition to California material, the museum houses a large collection of specimens from the northern Neotropics. Extensive fieldwork in Mexico by museum faculty and staff has enabled the assembly of a large, extremely important collection of specimens from that country. ... This Web site provides access to site-specific lists of insects that occur at various parks, refuges, and management units within North America. The lists were authored, compiled and contributed to this Web site by various professional and amateur lepidopterists. Each separate list follows the order of the most recent catalogue or listing of common names which is cited at the end of the list. Authors' and compilers' names are provided, along with their current affiliations, mailing addresses, e-mail addresses, and the date of the list. A list of references in standard format is included with each list. The list may be simply a list or a publication that includes a list. The list may give further information on the distribution of the insects within the unit, for example by district, locality, wilderness area, and so on. ... [Information of the supplier]
The Department of Entomology (California Academy of Sciences) houses over 18,300 primary type specimens of insects, arachnids, and myriapods. All types have been cataloged and databased. Images of specimens and labels are available for some groups, including the families Carabidae (Coleoptera), Formicidae (Hymenoptera), Therevidae (Diptera) and Acroceridae (Diptera). In addition to CAS holdings, the Academy also serves as a depository of primary types for 13 other institutions in the western United States. We receive these specimens on permanent or indefinite loan, depending on the institution and its regulations. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
This species-level database includes data on 6,297,638 specimens representing 147,693 taxa. It does not include information on groups of arthropods normally kept in alcohol with the exception of the Trichoptera (caddis-flies) and Embiidina (web-spinners). It also does not include information on specimens out on loan (more than 700,000 specimens), and the approximately 3 million specimens gathered as part of the Madagascar Arthropod Biodiversity Project. This database includes a considerable amount of geographical information. The number of specimens was recorded for all species and subspecies for each country. Additionally, the number of specimens was recorded for each state of North America (Canada, U.S.A., and Mexico) and each island group of Indonesia and the Galapagos Archipelago. Finally, the number of specimens was recorded for each county of California. For China, provinces were divided between Palearctic and Oriental Regions. For Indonesia, islands were divided between Oriental and Australian Regions. For Mexico, states were divided between Nearctic and Neotropical Regions. Florida was considered entirely Nearctic, and Japan was considered to be entirely Palearctic. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
Charles Valentine Riley pioneered the field of entomology in the United States. The Charles Valentine Riley Collection, part of the National Agricultural Library's (NAL) Special Collections, illustrates Riley's vision to enhance the success of agriculture through new scientific knowledge. The collection of papers and significant artifacts, also tells the story of Riley's love of nature, his keen ability to observe relationships in nature, and his devotion to recording his observations through drawing and writing. The collection complements a number of other significant manuscripts and rare books in Special Collections such as the USDA History Collection, manuscripts of Townend Glover and William Saunders, and early publications by Riley and others which provide historians and researchers a broad picture of the field of entomology in the 1800s. ... The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is the largest organization in the world serving the professional and scientific needs of entomologists and people in related disciplines. Founded in 1889, ESA today has more than 5,700 members. ESA offers journals that provide unsurpassed coverage of the broad science of entomology. The Society publishes four internationally acclaimed scientific journals, an annual comprehensive collection of short reports on preliminary and routine screening tests for the management of arthropod pests, a colorful, quarterly magazine, and a monthly member newsletter. The premier event of the Society is its Annual Meeting. Each year more than 2,000 entomologists and other scientists gather to exchange scientific information. Additionally, ESA offers employment opportunities that are advertised each month in the printed and online from a wide range of institutions and companies employing entomologists and individuals in related fields. ... Now exclusively online in a database format, this resource is an essential reference for anyone who works with insects. It includes more than 2,000 common names and is searchable by common name, scientific name, author, order, family, genus, and species. Interested individuals may propose new common names by submitting the Common Names Proposal Form that is reviewed by the Committee on the Common Names of Insects and voted on by the ESA Governing Board. Detailed information on the submission and approval process is present (Proposal Form for new Common Name or Change of ESA-Approved Common Name). ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
