The 12th European Fusarium Seminar is being organised by the Mycology and Food Safety Research Unit, at INRA and will be held at the Palais de la Bourse, Bordeaux. Fusarium is in general present everywhere on cultivated crop and in the environment. Harvests are usually safe but sometimes, depending on climatic conditions, various Fusarium species can cause terrible epidemics of blight. In addition, most Fusarium species produce secondary metabolites that accumulate in crops and are very toxic for human and animal consumers. The produced mycotoxins are usually very stable and only few enzymatic systems from other organisms have been found able to degrade or inactivate theses compounds. After almost thirty years of intensive research fighting against these undesirable pathogens and their toxins, are we able to mitigate their effects? A lot of factors influencing epidemics of Fusarium blight and accumulation of toxins in the harvests have been identified: climatic conditions, cultural practices, virulence of the pathogens, resistance status of cultivars, stressing conditions, the fungicides being used etc. In addition, exploration of Fusarium diversity is far from being complete. Indeed, the number of Fusarium species identified worldwide increases every day and epidemiology studies show continuous changes in populations. The Kingdom Fungi, constitute in excess of 1.5 million different species and they can be found in every ecosystem on our planet. By the same token, their diversity is enormous and they have a great impact on man and the environment. Their benefits are seen in the foods we consume, such as mushrooms, cheeses, drinks and sauces and now, more recently, fungi have been discovered that produce antibiotics, anticancer agents and even fuel-related compounds. Fungi are also used in the industrial manufacture of chemicals and enzymes. They are the main recyclers in the terrestrial environment, and at the same time help feed forest trees through mycorrhizal association with roots. They have close associations with algae or cyanobacteria to form lichens which are useful indicators of environmental change. Significantly, some fungi can damage food and food products, wood, furniture, fabrics, and even petroleum products. Yet, how much do we really know about the working processes of fungi, and for that matter, how many fungi really exist on the planet? The “Yeast Lipid Conference” (YLC) is an international scientific meeting held every second year (typically in late May) to promote free discussion between scientists working on or interested in all aspects of yeast lipids. The 12th edition of YLC will be held in Ghent, Belgium from the 20th till the 22nd of May 2015. The genus Fusarium comprises many plant-pathogenic species, causing diseases in most agriculturally important crops, and also can be harmful for humans and animals since many of species produce biologically active secondary metabolites (e.g., phytotoxins and mycotoxins) with an extraordinary chemical diversity. The economic importance of Fusarium species is high, due to both their impact on crop yields and the accumulation of mycotoxins in the colonized crops, which can make food commodities unacceptable for marketing or consumption. Research on Fusarium, carried out globally, concentrates the efforts of thousands of scientists and experts of different fields: mycology, plant pathology, genetics, agronomy, ecology, chemistry, biochemistry, and toxicology. There is a need to integrate different disciplines to provide solutions to the problems caused by Fusarium species that still, in spite of the enormous efforts of the scientific community, are far from solved. Effect of climatic changes on Fusarium and his host interactions, new active biological control agents, detection, genetic diversity in crops, development of new resistance to fungicides, changes in Fusarium populations, the need to reduce Fusarium mycotoxins in food and feed and ensure a plentiful, safe food supply: all are examples of challenges for those of us dealing with these complicated fungi. Scientists, breeders, industry representatives, and policy makers who are engaged in the issues related to Fusarium and the reduction of mycotoxin levels are invited to EFS13.
