BirdLife Österreich ist als gemeinnütziger Verein die größte und einzige bundesweit tätige ornithologische Vereinigung Österreichs. 1953 als "Österreichische Vogelwarte" gegründet und bis 1993 als "Österreichische Gesellschaft für Vogelkunde" tätig, lagen die Schwerpunkte der Vereinsarbeit seit der Gründung sowohl auf der Förderung wissenschaftlicher (vorwiegend faunistisch-ökologischer) Grundlagenarbeit als auch auf der praktischen Natur- und Vogelschutzarbeit. Beide Bereiche gewannen im Verlauf der Jahrzehnte stetig an Bedeutung, sodaß BirdLife Österreich derzeit als die in der Naturschutz-Grundlagenforschung führende NGO Österreichs bezeichnet werden kann. Im Mai 1965 hatte die „Tiroler Vogelwarte“ nach Innsbruck zu einer Tagung von „Alpenornithologen“ eingeladen. Sie stand unter dem Thema „Feldornithologisches Arbeiten im Gebirge“ und wurde zur Gründungsversammlung einer Gemeinschaft von Ornithologen aus Österreich, der Schweiz und Bayern. Ein wesentliches Ziel war von Anfang an, Kontakt unter den im Alpenraum tätigen Ornithologen herzustellen und das Wissen um die Vogelwelt der Alpen voranzubringen. Dies ist im Wesentlichen bis heute so geblieben. Der gesellschaftliche Wandel machte es allerdings erforderlich, die ehemals „lose Gesellschaft“ auf ein sicheres Fundament zu stellen. So wurde am 13. Juni 2008 in Fieschertal im Schweizer Kanton Wallis der Verein Monticola - Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Alpenornithologie e. V. gegründet. Der Steinrötel (Monticola saxatilis) als ein typischer Vertreter der Alpenvögel ist das Logo der Arbeitsgemeinschaft. Zur Mitgliedschaft eingeladen sind nicht nur in den Alpen wohnende Ornithologen sondern auch diejenigen, die vielleicht nur gelegentlich Exkursionen in den Alpen unternehmen und an der Vogelwelt interessiert sind. ... The German Conference on Bioinformatics (GCB) is an annual, international conference devoted to all areas of bioinformatics. Recent meetings attracted a multinational audience with 250 – 300 participants each year. The meeting is open to all fields of bioinformatics and is meant as a platform for the German and European bioinformatics community. The upcoming GCB will be organised by the Austrian Bioinformatics Platform ATBI and will be held at the University of Vienna. The conference will focus on computation in life sciences and aims to showcase applications and opportunities beyond. Spearheading scientists will be presenting along with young researchers and industry representatives. The first day September 25 is reserved for workshops and satellite meetings. The main conference will take place from September 26-28. The schedule will allow for fly-in on Wed and fly-out on Fri. For the first time ever the GCB will be held outside of Germany. While Vienna is mostly known for its impressive buildings from various architectural styles that no tourist should miss out, it also is the biggest University city in the German-speaking area and one of the hubs for life sciences in Europe. ...
