This collection features approximately 4500 full page plates and other significant illustrations of human anatomy selected from the Jason A. Hannah and Academy of Medicine collections in the history of medicine at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto. Each illustration has been fully indexed using medical subject headings (MeSH), and techniques of illustration, artists, and engravers have been identified whenever possible. There are ninety-five individual titles represented, ranging in date from 1522 to 1867. ... [Information of the supplier]
At present, there are online zoology databases which detail all of the bird and mammal specimens in the collection. Electronic catalogues of a small collection of Charles Darwin's material, and the extinct and endangered species in the collections are also available. Work on the database of the human remanins in the collections is progressing. Currently there are approximately 500 records online. The database will be continuously updated. ... The ‘MorphoBrowser’ database and interface is a 3D visualisation and searching tool for mammalian teeth, accessible over the web. It allows the user to ‘browse’ through the diverse range of tooth morphologies found in mammals, both extinct and extant. While browsing, the three-dimensional shape of the teeth can be viewed from any direction by rotating and scaling the tooth. ... [Information of the supplier]
... [Information des Anbieters, verändert]
Animal Info provides information on endangered mammals. If you are looking for a specific species, use the Individual Species Index, which includes common and scientific names. Use the Species Group Index to browse through a list of the common names of each species grouped by category (e.g. "Cats"). You can also Search the site below. Once at an individual species' page, a summary about the animal's biology and history can be obtained from the Profile section near the top of the page, giving details on status and trends (such as distribution and IUCN category), and relevant biological and ecological data with references. ... With support from the National Science Foundation, seventeen North American institutions and their collaborators developed the Mammal Networked Information System. The original objectives of MaNIS were to 1) facilitate open access to combined specimen data from a web browser, 2) enhance the value of specimen collections, 3) conserve curatorial resources, and 4) use a design paradigm that can be easily adopted by other disciplines with similar needs. As an NSF-funded initiative, MaNIS has achieved these objectives while avoiding the need for long-term, external maintenance of the network and centralized data management. The MaNIS network provides access to mammal specimen records from a variety of museum collection databases via several equivalent portals (see the MaNIS Network Architecture diagram, below). A portal presents web pages from which a user can send requests for data and visualize the results. Requests for data pass through provider software installed on computers at the participating institutions. Individual institutions determine which data are made accessible to the public and format their data to agree with the community-determined standard (in this case the Darwin Core). Depending on their individual requirements, institutions may serve data to the public directly from their working collection databases, or they may serve data via a separate public database to which data are periodically migrated. These public databases may be within the same institutions (local snapshot), or they may be hosted at a collaborating institution (hosted snapshot). By participating in MaNIS, institutions also provide data via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). ... [Information of the supplier]
The Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals opened in November 2003. This exciting learning environment features 274 mammal specimens, nearly a dozen fossils, and plenty of hands-on interactives. An Evolution Theater and a tiny model of one of the earliest mammals tell the dramatic story of mammal evolution over the past 225 million years. The Kenneth E Behring Family Hall of Mammals website explores how all mammals, past and present, are related to each other by virtue of common descent. Visitors to the site will learn that, as mammals, they belong to an ancient lineage that stretches back to before the time of the dinosaurs. As living mammals, they share a set of characteristics that helps scientists define this group. ... [Information of the supplier]
This educational Web site, designed to serve as a resource for students, teachers, and the general public interested in the biology and identification of mammals in North America, was developed by the External Affairs and Public Programs Division of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. The resources we make available are derived from the Museum's unparalleled natural history collections, its scientific research, permanent and special exhibits, libraries, and through collaborations with other organizations and individuals with special resources to complement the site. This Web site includes detailed descriptions, images, and distribution ranges for more than 400 mammals native to the North American continent. The primary resources for the site have been based in the continental United States, but as the opportunity occurs, the site will be expanded to complete the species found in Canada and Mexico. ...
