The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) was established in 1919 for the purpose of promoting interest in the study of mammals. In addition to being among the most charismatic of animals, mammals are important in many disciplines from paleontology to ecology and evolution. We, of course, are mammals and thus are in the interesting position of studying ourselves in quest of a greater understanding of the role of mammals in the natural world. The ASM is currently composed of over 4,500 members, many of whom are professional scientists. Purpose: The DGaaE ("German Society for General and Applied Entomology") unites entomologists who are engaged in this research field by profession or privately. It is the purpose of the society to support entomological research and to gather and communicate the existing knowledge in entomology. In favour of these tasks the DGaaE promotes personal contact, exchange of information, and the national and international cooperation of professional and amateur entomologists. Activities: Every second year, the DGaaE organizes an international congress. Study groups are regularly meeting for several special subjects - partly in cooperation with other scientific societies. The DGaaE periodically gives awards for important contributions to entomology: the FabriciusMedal for basic research, the Karl Escherich- Medal for applied research, and the Meigen-Medal for systematic and faunistic research. The excellent work of a young scientist (e.g. a thesis) is granted by the Weiss/Wiehe-Foundation every second year. Auf Anregung von Felix Rüschkamp gründeten 1927 12 Kollegen die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Rheinischer Koleopterologen, die sich zehn Jahre später dem Naturhistorischen Verein der Rheinlande und Westfalens anschloß. Unter den Zielen der Erforschung der rheinischen Käferarten in systematischer, ökologischer und tiergeografischer Hinsicht sowie der Schaffung einer Landessammlung rheinischer Käfer, die auf 250.000 Belegstücke veranschlagt wurde, entwickelte sich eine rege gemeinsame Forschungstätigkeit, die mit Unterbrechung durch den Krieg bis heute in Form mehrerer jährlicher Tagungen und Exkursionen anhält. Unter Vorsitz von Rüschkamp entstanden 15 Nachträge zur Käferfauna von Roettgen und eine 72.000 Exemplare umfassende Käfersammlung (heute etwa 500.000 Belege in Museums- und Privatsammlungen).
