Durch seine kultivierende Tätigkeit hat der Mensch ein hohes Maß an Abwechslung und eine Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Lebensräume geschaffen. Bedingt durch intensive Besiedelung und den Strukturwandel in der Land- und Forstwirtschaft hat die biologische Vielfalt rapide und in teilweise dramatischem Ausmaß abgenommen. Die Erhaltung von seltenen Tier- und Pflanzenarten, sowie die generelle Bewahrung der biologischen Vielfalt, sind inzwischen zu einem besonderen Anliegen in der Agrar- und Umweltpolitik geworden. Das Projekt SALVERE soll dazu beitragen, ökologisch hochwertige landwirtschaftliche Flächen ("high nature value farmland - HNVF") als eine wertvolle Ressource zu sehen und damit zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung des ländlichen Raumes und benachteiligter Gebiete beitragen. Es wird im Rahmen des CENTRAL EUROPE Programms durchgeführt und durch den Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung (EFRE - Europäische territoriale Zusammenarbeit) cofinanziert. Durch die Anwendung heimischer Samen, die im Projekt untersucht und verwendet werden, wird eine genetische Vermischung lokaler Populationen, durch die Verwendung konventioneller Saatgutmischungen mit nicht standortgerechten Arten und Sorten vermieden. The 2017 Eurasian Grassland Conference will take place from 4th to 11th July 2017 in Riga, the capital of Latvia. This is the 14th annual conference of the EDGG, the organization which aims to promote exchange and collaboration between those interested in all aspects of semi-natural and natural grassland research and conservation across Palaearctic realm. The conference is intended to bring together latest research, and to link this to practical management and policy contributing to the sustainability of semi-natural and natural grasslands. Emphasis will be placed on the cases where grassland ecosystems are shared between man-made and natural geographical borders. For the first time the conference will be jointly organised by two countries (Latvia and Lithuania), so providing an excellent opportunity to visit a range of semi-natural grasslands in Eastern Baltics. The event will be hosted by the University of Latvia, the Latvian Botanical Society and the Nature Research Centre in Lithuania.
