The Forest Ecosystems Research Center (Forschungszentrum Waldökosysteme or FZW) is part of the Forest Faculty of the University of Göttingen and carries out research into structural dynamics and element recycling processes in sylvan ecosystems as well as into the adaptability of forests in the face of environmental change. This includes study of the interaction between the ecosystems and their environment and the new types of forest damage. Last not least, these investigations also lead to an appraisal of commercial feasibility. The aim is to find out under which conditions sustainable forest management is possible. These conditions include natural factors such as climate and soil development as well as human factors such as the use of biomass and atmospheric pollution. Thus the Research Center studies the effects of atmospheric element deposition and forest management on sylvan ecosystems as well as the effects element outflow has on the environment of these ecosystems. An analysis of cause and effect is a condition for establishing critical loads and taking suitable measures for the stabilisation of sylvan ecosystems. Only in this way can detrimental environmental effects - such as on ground water - be avoided and sustainable forest management implemented. The Forest Ecosystems Research Center co-ordinates and integrates a number of different projects on this subject and supports close co-operation with institutions not belonging to the University. Activities include the organisation of conferences and the establishment of contacts with institutes and scientists. ... [Information of the supplier]
“forestknowledge.net” is a website run by forestry experts for forestry experts. We provide guaranteed quality, up-to-date information on forests, man and forest management. “forestknowledge.net” provides condensed, edited information on a wide range of topics regarding both forests and forestry in plain language.“forestknowledge.net” links research institutions, forest managers, forest owner associations and other non-governmental organisations to each other and provides access to experts. The editorial staff of the respective research institutes is responsible for the text content in “forestknowledge.net”. Each editorial office compiles expert information, edits it and then presents it on the web-portal. So called expert advisory boards, which are composed of at least two scientists, depending on the subject, guarantee the quality of the contributions. ... [Information of the supplier]
The dry forest is currently the most threatened of the Caledonian biomes. It is truly the heart of the Caledonian ecosystems, which are known world wide for their exceptional biodiversity. The terms “dry forest” or “sclerophyllous forest” are given to forest formations that develop in a dry climate (less than 1100mm of rain per year). In comparison, the rest of the island of Grande Terre receives about 2500mm of rain per year. The Caledonian dry forests are found on the west end of New Caledonia and extend to up to 300 meters à 400m above the coast. They are often found on sedimentary rock, and occasionally on basaltic rock. For about six months each year, they are subject to a dry season with drying trade winds. ... "Let nature be nature!" is the philosophy of the Bavarian Forest National Park. Nowhere else between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ural Mountains is such a large area of forests and moors allowed to grow and develop without the interference of man, into a unique landscape of primeval forest, a true “wilderness”. The Bavarian Forest National Park was Germany's first national park, inaugurated on 7th October 1970. On 1st August 1997 the national park was extended by an area of 11,000 hectares towards Bayerisch Eisenstein. Covering an area of 24,000 hectares, it is Germany's largest forested national park. ... The Center for International Forestry Research is a nonprofit, global facility dedicated to advancing human wellbeing, environmental conservation and equity. We conduct research that enables more informed and equitable decision making about the use and management of forests in less-developed countries. Our research and expert analysis help policy makers and practitioners shape effective policy, improve the management of tropical forests and address the needs and perspectives of people who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Our multidisciplinary approach considers the underlying drivers of deforestation and degradation which often lie outside the forestry sector: forces such as agriculture, infrastructure development, trade and investment policies and law enforcement. ... The European Forest Institute is the leading forest research network in Europe. It is an international organisation established by European States. EFI conducts research and provides policy advice on forest related issues. Further, it facilitates and stimulates forest related networking as well as promotes the supply of unbiased and policy relevant information on forests and forestry. It also advocates for forest research and for scientifically sound information as a basis for policy-making on forests. All these activities are done either at the pan-European level or the work is of European relevance and they are carried out by both the Institute’s HQ and Regional Offices. The Headquarters’ research units are: a) Sustainability and Climate Change b) Policy and Governance c) Foresight and Information EFI’s work in the field of policy advice includes enhanced support for decision takers and policy makers. It has a strong policy advice role by hosting the EU FLEGT Facility which supports the EU Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) process in developing countries, related to the implementation of the EU FLEGT Action Plan. EU FLEGT Facility assists the European Commission and the EU Member States in their joint efforts of its implementation. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
