Besonders naturnahe Buchenwälder Deutschlands sollen im Rahmen der Welterbekonvention der UNESCO als Weltnaturerbe nominiert werden. Bis Ende 2009 haben die Bundesländer Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Thüringen und Hessen gemeinsam einen Antrag erarbeitet, der die Aufnahme der Buchenwälder (Wälder mit wesentlicher Beteiligung der Rotbuche, Fagus sylvatica) als Weltnaturerbe begründet. Dieser Antrag wurde dem UNESCO-Welterbekomitee Anfang 2010 zur Prüfung eingereicht. Bisher dominieren Kulturstätten insbesondere die europäische Welterbeliste. Als Naturstätte in Deutschland war lange Zeit nur die Grube Messel in Hessen aufgrund ihres Fossilienvorkommens eingeschrieben; 2009 kam das Wattenmeer hinzu.
