... With about 12,500 known species, ants are a pivotal group of eusocial insects. Their estimated 10,000 trillions of individuals equal us in biomass (Hölldobler and Wilson, 1990), and they are hugely important ecologically and as our food competitors. Their diversity and niche specialization also make ants bio-indicators for land use and conservation. This symposium focuses on interactions between ants, plants, fungi and other insects, central themes in ecology and evolution. The understanding of interactions among species, especially mutualistic, is a long-standing challenge for evolutionary biologists, and the diversity of interactions between ants and other organisms, including plants, fungi, insects, scale insects or bacteria, makes them a ideal group for studying the function and evolution of interactions, to understand key ecological and evolutionary principles. ... The North-West European Section of the IUSSI and The Centre of Excellence in Biological Interactions at the University of Helsinki are delighted to invite you to join us at the Union’s 6th European meeting to be held 8-11.8 2016 in Helsinki, Finland. The conference will be held at the Helsinki University main campus in the city center. The main buildings are from the Czar period with typical Russian architecture from the late 19th century, whereas the conference site Porthania next door, represents the essence of late 60’s Finnish architecture. Within a 5min walk from the conference location you will find a bustling seaside market place, complete with small snack stands selling smoked herring, and hungry gulls. A good selection of hotels, backpacker hostels and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets are within easy reach of the conference location. Helsinki is also among the safest cities in the world – recent empirical experiments report that over 90% of wallets dropped in the street will be returned to the rightful owner – including the money and credit cards. ... Dear colleague, it is our pleasure to host the 8th Central European Workshop of Myrmecology in Regensburg. Ants have played a large role in zoological research at the University of Regensburg for almost 20 years, and today the team at the chair of evolutionary biology and zoology at UR is among the largest groups devoted to the study of ants in Central Europe. We are looking forward to three days of fascinating talks and presentations about our most favorite pet animals and are quite optimistic that also the post-congress tour through the surroundings of Regensburg will meet the needs of any myrmecologist. But when coming to Regensburg you should not forget to take the chance to enjoy the vibrancy of a city with a bi-millennial history, with the largest medieval city center north of the Alps, a picturesque urban landscape and lots of beer gardens. You are cordially invited to experience the 8th CEWM in Regensburg and we are looking forward to meeting you and enjoying your contribution. More information about how to register and details of the program will be added to the webpage in early 2019. ... [Information of the supplier]
