Ten major natural history museum libraries, botanical libraries, and research institutions have joined to form the Biodiversity Heritage Library Project. The group is developing a strategy and operational plan to digitize the published literature of biodiversity held in their respective collections. This literature will be available through a global “biodiversity commons.” As of November 2008, the 10 member libraries of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) members have over 10 million pages of key taxonomic literature available on the web. ... ... [Information des Anbieters]
The Swedish Species Information Centre works with knowledge about biodiversity in Sweden. The main tasks are to collect, evaluate and store the most important information about threatened and rare plant and animal species. A basic part in this work is to assess degrees and types of threat and to prepare the national so called Red Lists and Red Data Books. Much the work is focused on information through publications, conferences etc. The unit also suggests management plans and initiate research. ... [Information of the supplier]
The aim of the BUKO Campaign against Biopiracy is to make the political, social and economical components of biodiversity public. It criticises the way in that biological diversity is only discussed as a topic in conservation. This disguises the fact that it is being appropriated by multinational concerns, in conjunction with government research institutes. This is biopiracy. This rejection is accompanied by a radical critique of north-south relations as well as global capitalism, its forms of domination and power structures. The campaign aims to build resistance against biopiracy as well as discuss and support social alternatives. ... [Information of the supplier, translated]
In the framework of an initiative to advance biodiversity research in Germany, we will establish three exemplary large-scale and long-term research sites (funded by the German Research Foundation). They are termed Biodiversity Exploratories, in contrast to mainly descriptive observatories. The exploratories will establish and sustain the scientific infrastructure and develop the intellectual framework needed to address critical questions about changes in biodiversity and to evaluate the impacts of those changes for ecosystem processes. Thus, in the exploratories biodiversity and ecosystem research will be merged at a large scale and with a long-term perspective. In this first phase the exploratories will address the relationship between land-use intensity, biodiversity change, and ecosystem functioning for selected taxa. After establishment, these exploratories will also integrate further contributing projects proposed by the German research community. Thus, the biodiversity exploratories will serve as a stimulating research platform for the whole German biodiversity research community. ... [Information of the supplier]
The Stiftung Artenschutz (“Species Conservation Foundation”) is a joint initiative, currently comprising 45 respected zoos and nature conservation organisations. The foundation aims to preserve animal species (and their natural environment) which, although under severe threat of global extinction, do not have a strong enough lobby for their conservation. The Species Conservation Foundation achieves its goals through the joint initiative of currently 43 zoos and several nature conservation organisations, which provide public relations and financial support. International species conservation attains a new dimension through this concentration of specialists and funds. The work of the foundation and its partners and the sponsor commitment will be effectively communicated to over 20 million people every year. The innovative aspect of the Species Conservation Foundation’s concept is the idea of winning businesses as exclusive sponsors for a certain animal species in addition to conventional canvassing for donations and sponsorship. Support from these businesses makes it possible to implement conservation measures conceived by specialists for the highly endangered species. In return the sponsors will appear as exclusive sponsors together with their species on the Foundation Info Boards in all participating zoos, a measure which also offers great publicity. ... Prof. Heinz Sielmann made the first animal documentaries on television. To date, more than 250 episodes have been aired. He also filmed some 30 educational films for schools and about 100 documentaries for the International Zoological Film Encyclopaedia of the Institute of Scientific Films (IWF) in Göttingen. His popular cinema films "Song of the Wild", the Congo film "Lords of the Forest", "Galapagos - Dream Island in the Pacific" and "Alluring wild - on the wild paths of North America" have been aired in 25 different languages around the world. The high point of the countless activities Prof Sielmann undertook was the Heinz Sielmann Foundation (Heinz Sielmann Stiftung), which he founded in 1994 together with his wife Inge. The Foundation's guiding principle is “Conservation as a positive life philosophy”. Encouraging children and young people towards active conservation is its most important goal. ... Biological collections are one of the main sources of information on biological diversity. The large quantity of information they represent and the fact that they are dynamic require, for their consultation and updating, the use of specialized computer tools. Gathering these collections in an information network allows not only for the connection of the main databanks, the updating of information and direct contact with specialists, but also access, exchange and consultation of data open to the public in general throughout the world. The World Biodiversity Information Network (REMIB) is a computerized system of biological information (it includes databases of a curatorial, taxonomic, ecological, cartographic, bibliographic, ethno-biological type, use of catalogues on natural resources and other subject matters), based on an academic inter-institutional decentralized and international organization, formed by research and higher education centers, both public and private, that possess both scientific biological collections and data banks. ... Worldwide, thousands of animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. Even in Switzerland more than 3000 animals and plants appear in the so-called Red List of threatened species. Without appropriate protection measures many of these species may soon vanish forever. This website serves to demonstrate the dramatic situation of species threat, and to present the threatened species. At the same time, the political responsibilities are stressed ─ both of the Republic, the Cantons, and the Communes, but also of every individual. Finally, information about active, and planned, protective action for the benefit of threatened species will be found here. The overall objective of this website is to awaken the broadest possible public interest and understanding for the concerns of species protection. ... [Information of the supplier, translated]
