The BioSystematic Database of World Diptera (BDWD) provides a comprehensive portal to knowledge about these dipterans as well as a framework to organize and integrate current and future data, information and knowledge. The linnaean system of names provides unique information keys within a hierarchical framework which can map our knowledge of life from a historical (phylogenetic) perspective. Unfortunately after some 250 years of research, there are now too many names, including identical names for different organisms and many different names for the same organism. FlyView is an image database on Drosophila development and genetics, especially on expression patterns of genes (enhancer trap lines, cloned genes). Our aim is to establish the possibility to compare images on the computer screen and to search for special patterns at different developmental stages. FlyView presents three possibilities for searching: Search for pattern elements (with keywords in text descriptions, getting back images with links to the appropriate stocks), search for stocks (with stock number, allele, genotype, chromosome, insertion site, viability, developmental stage or expression pattern, getting back a list of found stocks that guide to full descriptions (including links to images, e-mail address for ordering and, in the case of BDGP lines, also direct links to FlyBase and/or EofD)) and Overview (an actual list of all lines included in FlyView, linked to stock descriptions and images). This database presents the current results of large scale protein trapping screens that provide both information on which cells express each tagged gene, and subcellular localization of GFP-tagged proteins. It contains sequence coordinates of inserted transposons, information on the tagged genes, and images with expression patterns of GFP in Drosophila tissues. FlyTrap serves as the data repository for lines generated in the Chia, Cooley, and Spradling labs. The protein trap stocks listed in FlyTrap are available for distribution. ... Systema Dipterorum is a dipterological web site focused on nomenclature. It contains all names proposed for extant and extinct Diptera and it is a source for information about those names. The two main components of Systema Dipterorum are the Nomenclator and the reference database. The Nomenclator allows users to check names, find the status (valid or invalid) and correct (valid) name for obsolete ones as well as basic information such as type, family classification and source for all names. ViBRANT recognised the need for a bibliography of life, i.e. a freely accessible bibliography of every taxonomic paper ever published. None of the currently available aggregators were satisfactory, so we have chosen to extend the Plazi bibliographic tool, RefBank. There are two primary reasons for this choice, first the original developer, Guido Sautter, is a partner in ViBRANT and second, RefBank contains a parsing tool that will turn Rod Page's "cryptic text strings" into structured references that can be easily transformed into any of the other conventional forms (see the Data Format Report). The bulk of RefBank's growth to date has come from ViBRANT contributed references, with 80,000 references being accumulated in the first six months of operation and another 85,000 references in the second six months. Work continues within ViBRANT to extract bibliographies from published works and parse them to generate more references. This work is to ensure that RefBank is seeded with sufficient references at launch so as to engage users. There was a significant development for RefBank in Autumn 2012 when it was the subject of a presentation and demonstration at TDWG 2013. Since when we have seen the addition of community contributed references.
