Im Mai 1965 hatte die „Tiroler Vogelwarte“ nach Innsbruck zu einer Tagung von „Alpenornithologen“ eingeladen. Sie stand unter dem Thema „Feldornithologisches Arbeiten im Gebirge“ und wurde zur Gründungsversammlung einer Gemeinschaft von Ornithologen aus Österreich, der Schweiz und Bayern. Ein wesentliches Ziel war von Anfang an, Kontakt unter den im Alpenraum tätigen Ornithologen herzustellen und das Wissen um die Vogelwelt der Alpen voranzubringen. Dies ist im Wesentlichen bis heute so geblieben. Der gesellschaftliche Wandel machte es allerdings erforderlich, die ehemals „lose Gesellschaft“ auf ein sicheres Fundament zu stellen. So wurde am 13. Juni 2008 in Fieschertal im Schweizer Kanton Wallis der Verein Monticola - Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Alpenornithologie e. V. gegründet. Der Steinrötel (Monticola saxatilis) als ein typischer Vertreter der Alpenvögel ist das Logo der Arbeitsgemeinschaft. Zur Mitgliedschaft eingeladen sind nicht nur in den Alpen wohnende Ornithologen sondern auch diejenigen, die vielleicht nur gelegentlich Exkursionen in den Alpen unternehmen und an der Vogelwelt interessiert sind. ...
