Die Paläontologische Gesellschaft ist eine internationale Vereinigung für den deutschsprachigen Raum. Sie wurde 1912 in Greifswald gegründet. Ziele der Gesellschaft sind die Förderung der Paläontologie und der Kontakt unter den Paläontologen, Geowissenschaftlern und interessierten Laien aller Länder. Wesentliches Ziel ist auch, die Paläontologie der Öffentlichkeit besser verständlich zu machen. Die politische Aufgabe der Gesellschaft ist, die Interessen der Paläontologie gegenüber den Verantwortlichen in Politik, Hochschulen, Wirtschaft, Behörden und Medien zu vertreten. The origin and development of the diversity of species represents one of the greatest challenges to fundamental research in the whole field of biology. The basic concepts like adaptation or selection are universal and applicable to many different systems, making evolutionary biology the core of a new integrative biology thereby lending fundamental orientation to the modern biosciences. The field has gained new topicality in the genome era, since the sequencing of the genome of many species opens up new windows on a number of issues which have been subject of investigation for a long time. With this funding initiative the Foundation aims at strengthening the field of evolutionary biology in Germany by generating impulses for both research and higher education. The major goal is to anchor the concepts of evolutionary biology in university teaching more firmly, to create attractive career prospects for junior scientists as well as to promote their interaction on a European level. In principle, funding is open to all departments related to the topic. The different elements of the funding scheme – support for PhD students and postdocs, funding of visiting professors and lecturers, or symposia and summer schools – can be combined with one another. Das diesjährige Symposium wird eine zentrale Frage der Evolutionsbiologie behandeln: Was bestimmt die Form von Strukturen? Wieso sehen Tiere, Pflanzen und ihre Organe so aus, wie sie aussehen? Meist wird die Antwort (die Ebene der Kausalität) den Feldern der Synthetischen oder Erweiterten Evolutionstheorie bzw. auf Strukturebene oft auch der Evolutionären Entwicklungsbiologie zugeordnet. Damit bleiben aber andere Aspekte der organismischen Evolutionsbiologie außen vor. Unter dem Konzept der ‚Evolutionären Morphologie‘ haben wir versucht, kausale Bedingtheiten der Vielgestaltigkeit des Lebens zusammenzufassen. Das genaue Label spielt natürlich gar keine Rolle, aber diejenigen, die fasziniert von der Vielgestaltigkeit des Lebens sind, sind aus unserer Sicht eigentlich immer auch „Morphologen“. Die Eingangsfrage erscheint also gerade in Zeiten der Dominanz funktionell-genomischer Sichtweisen interessanter denn je. Das kommende „Phylogenetische Symposium“ soll sich dieser Frage widmen.
