Die Mitgliedsinstitutionen bezeichnen sich als Forschungssammlungen. Darunter verstehen sie das Vorhandensein einer großen, wissenschaftlich zugänglichen naturkundlichen Sammlung sowie zugehöriger Forschungslabore und Sammlungswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftler. Die DNFS fördert die Kooperation und Abstimmung zwischen den Mitgliedsinstitutionen, erarbeitet Synergien, unterstützt die Erarbeitung regionaler Schwerpunkte und Serviceaufgaben.
