On this page the Bavarian Agency for Viticulture and Horticulture presents a simple, general identification key for insects and spiders aimed at amateur gardeners and people interested in natural history who have no foreknowledge of the subject. By means of many pictures and a little text, and with no knowledge of subject jargon, it should be possible for the amateur to assign his finds to one or other of the groups of insect or spiders through a sort of question and answer game with an “Expert Computer”. The promise of simplicity and clarity does not allow consideration of all the animal groups so that, for example, dragonflies, cockroaches, and lice have been ignored. In any case, it is hardly possible to take the identification to the species level. Normally this is not necessary. Just the knowledge that the animal in question belongs, say, to the bugs, is enough to obtain an overview of the life and importance of this group in the ecology section that follows. ... The Dresden Meetings on Insect Phylogeny are dedicated to a broad variety of topics concerning the phylogeny of insects. This includes both the interordinal and intraordinal levels, both morphological and molecular work, and both extant and fossil taxa, as well as occasional methodological contributions. The 8th Dresden Meeting on Insect Phylogeny (2017) will not have a particular focus but will generally deal with frontline topics of phylogenetic research in insects. There will be ca. 30 talks presented by high-profile specialists, plus many poster presentations. The language of the Meeting is English. ... [Information of the supplier]
The butterfly portal offers a forum for determination, a forum for further questions, determination assistance with photos, reviews of determination literature and more. [Editorial staff vifabio]
This database serves primarily to counteract the "memory loss" of important antiquarian lepidopterological publications and breeding reports. "Where can I find identification literature or publications about a particular butterfly, where can I find antiquarian journals especially concerned with butterflies (Lepidoptera)?" Special publications dealing with butterflies have appeared during the past hundred years in many different, not only purely entomological, journals. When searching the internet there are very few references. With the database I would like to make a small contribution. The first part of the database contains records from 1860 – 2007 from the whole of Europe and makes no claim to completeness. Now and again I have slipped into non-European countries. The period before 1860 awaits later work. Furthermore we try to store a picture or a PDF-file for each journal or each book, if no protection of copyright exists. Antiquarian literature was photographed by me. ... [Information of the supplier, translated and modified]
... Purpose: The DGaaE ("German Society for General and Applied Entomology") unites entomologists who are engaged in this research field by profession or privately. It is the purpose of the society to support entomological research and to gather and communicate the existing knowledge in entomology. In favour of these tasks the DGaaE promotes personal contact, exchange of information, and the national and international cooperation of professional and amateur entomologists. Activities: Every second year, the DGaaE organizes an international congress. Study groups are regularly meeting for several special subjects - partly in cooperation with other scientific societies. The DGaaE periodically gives awards for important contributions to entomology: the FabriciusMedal for basic research, the Karl Escherich- Medal for applied research, and the Meigen-Medal for systematic and faunistic research. The excellent work of a young scientist (e.g. a thesis) is granted by the Weiss/Wiehe-Foundation every second year. Journals: The Mitteilungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie contain publications of the lectures and the posters held at the congresses of the DGaaE. Three or four times a year, an issue of the DGaaE-Nachrichten is published to inform the members about the latest news. Furthermore, members may receive further entomological journals at a decreased rate (currently the journals Entomologia generalis and Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift). Membership: Currently the DGaaE comprises some 860 members worldwide. Annual membership dues are at a rate of 40,00 Euro (ca. 40 US $) and include the receipt of the two journals DGaaE Nachrichten and Mitteilungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie. We cordially invite you to join the DGaaE. ... [Information of the supplier]
