In the literature database of the Botanical Institute of the University of Innsbruck, articles from current journals and the new books and separata of the institute are registered. Up to the spring of 2006 ca. 50000 citations were already recorded; the database will be continuously expanded. FloraWeb is the online offering of the Federal Agency for Nature Protection (BfN) concerning wild plant species, plant communities, and the natural vegetation of Germany. At present the species selection is restricted to ferns and flowering plants (phanerogams), the extension to mosses (bryophytes) is planned. The entries come from current, actualised databases and projects of the BfN and its co-operating partners (see below) and thus are available to the public in their current form. Under the menu point “Plant species” ("Pflanzenarten") ca. 3500 species profiles with up to 55 individual items of information about taxonomy, biology, ecology, habitat, distribution, and inventory situation, endangerment and protection, as well as photos, can be accessed that are generated at the current time by means of dynamic accessing the underlying databases. The species descriptions can be accessed by name, by alphabetical name lists, or a systematic family tree. Information about distributions in Germany is available through dynamically prepared maps and the interactive GIS application FloraMap. In the sub-menu point “Properties” ("Suche nach Eigenschaften") all individual information items in searches can be freely combined. Again, the resulting species lists can be transferred to the map module FloraMap where one then has the possibility of displaying the spatial distribution of these groups of species in Germany. Under the menu point “Associations” ("Gesellschaften"), the likewise collected information about plant communities and their regional endangerment in Germany is stored in the profiles. These profiles of the vegetation units are extended through a database of phytosociological records under the name “VegetWeb”, which is to be continuously expanded. Under the menu point “Vegetation map” the units of the potential natural vegetation of Germany are displayed in profiles, with text explanations and photos, that will be expanded through the map display dynamically linked to the profiles. The literature database of the vegetation ecology of central Europe of the Braunschweig University Library is a current database in which scientific publications about the flora and vegetation of Central Europe are indexed. Until now, the focus has been on Germany; indexing of the relevant publications for Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy, and Slovenia is planned. The adjacent areas are also taken into consideration in the selection. Currently ca. 11000 publications have been indexed whereby the data are continually updated and expanded. A special feature of the database is that scientists who are active in this area can themselves enter records of their publications into the database via the World Wide Web. The newly-founded organisation “NetPhyD” (“Phytodiversity Network Germany”) will inform visitors about the goals, current activities and developments in the individual sections of the network on its website. Why do we need a Phytodiversity Network? And why a phytodiversity network in Germany? The answer is obvious. Roughly 35 years ago, the central agency for floristic mapping was founded. With this “establishment” came the first time, initially for West Germany, then also the eastern part of Germany and finally for all Germany, that all floristic botanists were brought together in one network. This eventually resulted in the publication of the atlases of the distribution of vascular plants in West and East Germany. Since this time, as the effort to produce a nationwide distribution atlas takes place – the data has already been merged, the final corrections are still pending – countless further initiatives are beginning, that can answer questions such as “Why can a plant taxon be found where?”, “Why is one species common and another rare?”, “Why is one species endangered, while another spreads further?”. Die Floristisch-soziologische Arbeitsgemeinschaft ist eine deutschsprachige Vereinigung floristisch und pflanzensoziologisch interessierter Fachleute und Liebhaber. Sie wird ehrenamtlich geleitet und steht jedem Interessierten offen. Die Aufgabenfelder der floristisch-soziologischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft liegen in der wissenschaftlichen Fortbildung ihrer über 1200 in- und ausländischen Mitglieder (Stand 2005) sowie in der Förderung von Forschungen zur heimischen Flora und Vegetation, insbesondere auch im Hinblick auf naturschutzbezogene Fragestellungen. VegetWeb is a phytosociological database, in which vegetation records can be searched online, displayed and downloaded for further handling. The development of VegetWeb is closely linked with the vegetation databases working group, which has been devoted, since 2002, to the collection, distribution and use of phytosociological data in Germany and the adjoining countries. Vegetation records have been collected worldwide for ca. 100 years using unified methods: on a test plot on the ground all visible plant species are recorded together with their cover-abundance values. The head data contain facts about the position, vegetation structure and location. Records are compared, analysed, and presented in vegetation tables (cross matrices of species x record). They form the foundation data for the definition and the boundaries of plant communities and are simultaneously condensed floral observation data. In Central Europe public archiving (in specialist journals) and the mutual use of vegetation records has a long tradition. In a phytosociological data base the records are digital and can be searched with great efficiency, filtered and linked to other databases – in the case of VegetWeb, online via the internet. The basic stock of VegWeb consists of 2353 records collected by the Federal Department for Nature Conservation from acid-soil beech woods (Luzulo-Fagion), in area terms the most important vegetation species in Germany, whose plant species diversity was thereby made available through detailed analysis. In 2003 the importation of the database BERGWALD added 4934 records from the Bavarian Alps which enabled the evaluation of the forest vegetation of an especially species rich region The architecture of VegetWeb was developed on Planto, taking into account the newest research findings from MoreTax and VegBank. This allows one to deal with the names of plant species in the sense of conceptual taxonomy. Since the species names used in the original records (e.g. Luzula albida) are stored in exactly the same way as their interpretations (e.g. Luzula albida » Luzula luzuloides), VegetWeb unites, while querying, the species taxonomy of all records encountered in the references of the German standard list of ferns and vascular plants by WISSKIRCHEN & HAEUPLER (1998). Thus, the usual, extremely time consuming, harmonising of the taxonomy in the records obtained by associations from various sources is automated. The database BiolFlor contains almost 3660 species and more than 60 traits. This data results from several projects conducted in the Department of Community Ecology (UFZ - Centre for Environmental Research) over the last 10 years. It was thus possible to rework and enlarge a previously existing database. However, the work on BiolFlor will not be finished, yet. We will continuously try to improve the database, correct errors and expand the coverage of traits and their states. Registered users will be able to download updates in the future.
