"Where do we come from?", "Who are we?", "Where are we going to?" The exhibition of the Neanderthal Museum is based on those central topics. One can find them in any part of the house. The permanent exhibition traces humankind's long journey from the origins in the African savannahs to the urban centres of our times. Of course, emphasis is given to the Neanderthals and the true-to-life figures based upon skeletal remains which were reconstructed using the latest forensic methods. Multimedia arrangements and audio-experiences, but also classical media such as exhibits and texts give vivid insights into the results of current archaeological and palaeoanthropological research. Computer terminals offer the opportunity for further individual in-depth research. ... [Information of the supplier]

... [Information des Anbieters]

The Society for Anthropology (GfA) can be viewed as a representative for all branches of anthropology and human biology in the German language area. It was formed in 1992 following one year of preparation and conceived as a combined successor society for the no longer existant German Society for Anthropology from the new German states and the Society for Anthropology and Human Genetics from the old German states. Because it stands for representation for the common scientific good, the society promotes research and teaching as well as engaging in the active dissemination and application of the scientific results yielded in the process of studying human biology. ... In Cooperation with the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology, the Library of the University of Heidelberg has digitalized selected anatomical literature and lithographs from the 19th century. This includes textbooks, scripts and drawings which described the teaching and research of this period, and has provided a unique insight into the work and history of the Institute. The oldest textbooks that have been digitalized were written by Jacob Fidelis Ackermann (*1765 †1815). The public was made aware of his presence from the beginning of his tenure in Heidelberg because he attempted, often with little success, to rebut the phrenological theses of Franz Josef Galls (*1758 †1828). Most of the anatomical drawings are lithographs by anatomists who worked in Heidelberg during their scientific career. Many of these very artistic lithographs originated in Heidelberg. Indeed Friedrich Tiedemann (*1781 †1861) dissected innumerable human and zoological cadavers during his tenure in Heidelberg, which he used to write his book “Tabulae Anatomicae”. Unfortunately, the work of Vincent Fohmann (*1794 †1837) concerning the “Saugadersystem”, today known as the lymphatic system, has been for all practical purposes forgotten. He was however well known outside of Germany for his uncomparable detailed mercury injections of specimens. Other authors include the Anatomists Friedrich Arnold (*1803 †1890), Carl Gegenbaur (*1826 †1903), and Alexander Ecker (*1816 †1887). ... [Information of the supplier, modified]
