FINS is the Freshwater Invasives – Networking for Strategy conference being hosted by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC). FINS will address key topics relating to freshwater invasive species and harmful aquatic pathogens. The primary objective of the conference is to provide a forum where international scientists, policy makers and stakeholders will address designated themes with a view to informing management and policy development in this increasingly important area. The themes that will provide the focus for deliberations during the conference will be: Policy & Strategy, Biosecurity, Management and Economics. Invited experts from around the globe will address the above themes, with ample time given to panel discussion. Workshop sessions led by the keynote speakers and other experts, as required, will provide the main focus of the conference and will be arranged to facilitate involvement of all delegates in relatively small groups. Synthesis sessions will aim to draw firm conclusions from the discussions and put forward concrete recommendations that will inform both national and international policy makers. ... The University of Florida is hosting the 20th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species that will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, October 22-26, 2017. The International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species is widely considered the most comprehensive international forum on aquatic invasive species and continues to evolve to address new and emerging issues. Sessions and presentations include the review of accumulated scientific knowledge; presentation of the latest field research; introduction of new technological developments for prevention, monitoring and control; discussion of policy and legislation; and mechanisms to raise awareness with the general public through education and outreach initiatives. In recent years the conference has typically involved over 400 participants from over 30 countries, representing academia, industry, government agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders involved in the issues. Many are seeking opportunities for international cooperation and collaboration to address AIS issues from a global perspective. ... [Information of the supplier, modified]

New discoveries about the unexpected lifestyles of aquatic microbial eukaryotes (protists) are advancing rapidly through the targeted exploration of cultured isolates and whole communities using molecular sequencing and imaging techniques in concert with evolutionary theory and geochemical analysis. Three major contributions to microeukaryote biology, ecology, and evolution that are catapulting the field forward are the Marine Microbial Eukaryote Transcriptome Sequencing Project (MMETSP), the Tara Oceans Expeditions, and the Malaspina Expedition. Although these three efforts focused on marine organisms, they have provided an unprecedented wealth of new data to the broader protist ecology, evolution, biogeochemistry, and model system research communities. Moreover, these efforts are enabling development of new concepts about the interactions of protists with viruses, bacteria, and archaea. The goal of the symposium is to increase the impact of the new knowledge generated from these unique datasets and to foster new collaborations among aquatic microbial ecologists, evolutionary biologists, oceanographers, limnologists, cell and molecular biologists, geneticists, and more. The objective is also to address “What questions can we now ask because of the completion of the marine field campaigns and with the arrival of new technologies, methods, and concepts from all corners of the biological sciences?” ...
