The LCIE has the official status of a Working Group within the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the Word Conservation Union (IUCN). This view is of the LCIE as a node (or hub) in the centre of an expert network that covers a wide range of activity. The LCIE therefore only partially overlaps with many activities for which it can claim at least some credit. These include many of the conservation and / or research projects that core group members and associated partners work with. In addition, will come some projects or specific products that are completely produced under the LCIE umbrella. This will embrace various once-off activities such as guidelines for good conservation practice, letters written, workshops held, position statements developed etc. Finally, our ambition is to contribute to providing the inspiration, methodology, vision and initiation to a wider group of activities conducted by network members, conservationists, managers and researchers throughout Europe, and the rest of the world. ... Between 1996 and 2006, The Tiger Foundation (TTF) operated as a 100% volunteer conservation organization exclusively dedicated to the preservation of wild tigers. TTF is no longer active, although some of its founders continue to privately participate in tiger conservation work. Following a successful 10 years history; having raised millions of dollars of funding, actively managed and participated in several successful tiger conservation initiatives and achieved a great deal of success, the founders of TTF decided to wind down the organization and to move on to other charitable endeavours. The web site will remain alive for information and archival purposes. Through it, you will have the power to access, though links and information posted on this site, every available fact, fable, thought and theory regarding Panthera tigris, as well as find an effective instrument through which you can link to those working to prevent the extinction of these magnificent, but critically endangered animals. ... By the middle of the 19th century, lynxes had completely disappeared from Bavaria. It is due to an approved release of 17 lynxes (between 1982-1987) in the area of today’s Šumava National Park that lynxes again populate the Bavarian-Bohemian border area. The two national parks (Bavarian Forest and Šumava) currently represent the core lynx habitat, and the centre from which the animals are spreading to new areas. It is the priority objective of our project to collect current data on lynxes and their use of territory, and on the relationship between the predator and its large animals of prey – roe and red deer – within a large mountain forest ecosystem left mainly to nature. The data collection will to be carried out with the assistance of the latest communication technology in accordance with animal protection laws, and without disturbing the animals in their natural habitat. ... The proposed theme of the Conference will be “Bears and humans in the 21st century: challenges and solutions for a peaceful coexistence”. With this theme we aim to draw attention to the problems bears are facing in Greece, and hopefully garner public interest and support for their effective solution. The Conference theme is also representative of one of the major challenges for bears around the world: in midst of an enduring global financial crisis, national economies are reshaping and restructuring themselves in order to become more competitive and resilient in the new world of the 21st century. These structural changes have significant effects on the conservation of global biodiversity, including bears. From the effects of global warming on polar bears to the problems arising from bears living in the proximity of humans in Europe and North America, all bear species are affected by the new realities of the 21st century. Identifying these conflicts in a world that is changing rapidly will be the major step towards finding the solutions that will ultimately secure the survival of these species on a world-wide scale. The 23rd International Conference on Bear Research and Management aims to be a forerunner in this process by providing a meeting point and becoming the public outlet for the most experienced specialists in the field of bear research, conservation and management. ...
