The Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute (vTI) is one of four German federal research institutes under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV). The vTI was created on January 1, 2008 from the German Federal Research Centre for Fisheries, the German Federal Research Centre for Forestry and Forest Products and part of the German Federal Agricultural Research Centre. The vTI drafts scientific basics as decision-making helps for the policy of the German federal government and thus serves, with its application oriented and practice related research, the development of the society of tomorrow. Besonders naturnahe Buchenwälder Deutschlands sollen im Rahmen der Welterbekonvention der UNESCO als Weltnaturerbe nominiert werden. Bis Ende 2009 haben die Bundesländer Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Thüringen und Hessen gemeinsam einen Antrag erarbeitet, der die Aufnahme der Buchenwälder (Wälder mit wesentlicher Beteiligung der Rotbuche, Fagus sylvatica) als Weltnaturerbe begründet. Dieser Antrag wurde dem UNESCO-Welterbekomitee Anfang 2010 zur Prüfung eingereicht. Bisher dominieren Kulturstätten insbesondere die europäische Welterbeliste. Als Naturstätte in Deutschland war lange Zeit nur die Grube Messel in Hessen aufgrund ihres Fossilienvorkommens eingeschrieben; 2009 kam das Wattenmeer hinzu. Echte Buchen-Urwälder sind in Deutschland bis auf kleinere Relikte längst verschwunden und nur noch im östlichen Mitteleuropa, vor allem in den Karpaten, zu finden. Seit einiger Zeit können sich jedoch auch in Deutschland wieder Wälder in Nationalparken oder Naturwaldreservaten natürlich entwickeln.
