Few species have shown such a dramatic and still unabated decline as the Common hamster over the past decades. This immense loss is illustrated by the latest results from the national report pursuant to Article 17 of the Habitats Directive. Meanwhile, there is no question that the decline of the species is not a phenomenon of the western edge of the distribution, but is also evident in neighbouring Eastern European countries. For this reason the “International Hamster Workgroup”, which has been working on the conservation and research of the Common hamster since 1994, is becoming increasingly important. Colleagues from all over Europe regularly take part in the annual meetings; demonstrating the urgent need to exchange information and have discussions to save the Common hamster. In France, the European Hamster (Cricetus cricetus) only lives in Alsace and its population is dropping sharply. In 1972, there were 329 Alsatian towns where this animal lived; in 2014, this species is only present with certitude in 17 towns, mainly located in the South-Western area of Strasbourg. A specific action plan targeting protection of the hamster in Alsace, with the 2007-2011 National Action Plan (NAP), was aimed at boosting populations in the three Priority Action Zones, and halting population decline. In spite of progress, the viability threshold in Alsace for the European Hamster still has not been reached. Because of this, a new NAP for the European Hamster was put in place for 2012-2016. The international Colloquium "Biology of the Soricidae IV" is the continuation of presumably the most important and fruitful conference series for shrew research. The previous three meetings took place in Powdermill (USA) in 1990 and 2002, and Syktyvkar (Russia) in 2010. About 50 shrew specialists participated in each of them. The presented results and topics were widely disseminated in the two valuable and well-cited Proceedings and the Abstract book from Syktyvkar.The fourth conference will be held at the Faculty of Biology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (western Poland) from 12 to 14 September 2016. The main expected topics are: Ecology, behaviour & physiology; Morphological, molecular & cytogenetic diversity; Zoogeography & systematics;Parasites, diseases, threats & protection. Completed in 2003, the Human Genome Project (HGP) was a 13-year project coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. During the early years of the HGP, the Wellcome Trust (U.K.) became a major partner; additional contributions came from Japan, France, Germany, China, and others. Project goals were to identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA, determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA, store this information in databases, improve tools for data analysis, transfer related technologies to the private sector, and address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project. DDBJ (DNA Data Bank of Japan) began DNA data bank activities in earnest in 1986 at the National Institute of Genetics (NIG). From the beginning, DDBJ has been functioning as one of the International DNA Databases, including EBI in Europe and NCBI in the USA as the two other members. Consequently, we have been collaborating with the two data banks through exchanging data and information on Internet and by regularly holding two meetings, the International DNA Data Banks Advisory Meeting and the International DNA Data Banks Collaborative Meeting. DDBJ is the sole DNA data bank in Japan, which is officially certified to collect DNA sequences from researchers and to issue the internationally recognized accession number to data submitters. We collect data mainly from Japanese researchers, but of course accept data and issue the accession number to researchers in any other countries. Since we exchange the collected data with EMBL/EBI and GenBank/NCBI on a daily basis, the three data banks share virtually the same data at any given time.
