The Kärnten Natural History Society is one of the oldest, and richest in tradition, European societies – its research and education activities go back to 1848. In 1974, as one of the founders, in 1884, of the Kärnten State Museum, it transferred its ownership rights to the Rudolfinum, together with its natural history collection, to the State of Kärnten.
