The 50th Marine Biology Symposium is taking place on Helgoland, a site with important phyto-, zooplankton and other time series. The overarching theme of this EMBS will therefore revolve around long-term changes in the coastal and marine environment. However the programme will take a holistic approach and deal with different aspects of time series research from the primary science (long-term changes, foodweb interactions etc) via data management and emerging technologies (e.g. autonomous sensors) to investigating/communicating the societal relevance of results emanating from time series data. ... Next year's EMBS will take place in Dublin on August 25 to 29. It will be hosted by University College Dublin, in the state-of-the-art O’Brien Centre for Science. The social programme will provide opportunities to sample the the city’s famous cultural life and explore the UNESCO Dublin Bay Biosphere. 2019 will be the International Year of the Salmon, a fish that has a special place in the mythology of Ireland. Look out for salmon throughout the scientific and social programme ... [Information of the supplier]
New discoveries about the unexpected lifestyles of aquatic microbial eukaryotes (protists) are advancing rapidly through the targeted exploration of cultured isolates and whole communities using molecular sequencing and imaging techniques in concert with evolutionary theory and geochemical analysis. Three major contributions to microeukaryote biology, ecology, and evolution that are catapulting the field forward are the Marine Microbial Eukaryote Transcriptome Sequencing Project (MMETSP), the Tara Oceans Expeditions, and the Malaspina Expedition. Although these three efforts focused on marine organisms, they have provided an unprecedented wealth of new data to the broader protist ecology, evolution, biogeochemistry, and model system research communities. Moreover, these efforts are enabling development of new concepts about the interactions of protists with viruses, bacteria, and archaea. The goal of the symposium is to increase the impact of the new knowledge generated from these unique datasets and to foster new collaborations among aquatic microbial ecologists, evolutionary biologists, oceanographers, limnologists, cell and molecular biologists, geneticists, and more. The objective is also to address “What questions can we now ask because of the completion of the marine field campaigns and with the arrival of new technologies, methods, and concepts from all corners of the biological sciences?” ... The Foresight EuroMarine workshop PlankDiv aims at gathering expertise in species distribution and ecological niche modelling, plankton biogeography, functional traits, and plankton phylogeny to quantitatively assess the impact of climate and climate change on plankton community structure and functioning. The main objective of the workshop is to structure a EuroMarine consortium gathering specialists in the study of potential impacts of climate change on plankton diversity and biogeography and specialists in marine ecosystem functioning, and to develop a joint proposal on future collaborative work. We will bring together specialists on European shelf seas, the North Atlantic and the global ocean to create synergies based on work at regional to global scale. The joint analysis of different ocean basins and shelf seas will allow for comparative work among different marine ecosystems (Mediterranean, North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Barents Sea, Arctic Ocean, Antarctic Ocean), with a particular focus on: 1) the comparison of the drivers of plankton and trait biogeography, 2) differences in plankton ecological niches, 3) potential links between ecosystem composition and ecosystem functioning, and 4) the vulnerability of marine planktonic ecosystems to climate change. The use of ecological niche models (ENM) for the investigation of the link between plankton ecosystem components, ecosystem function and ecosystem service provision will be stressed out. One working group will be dedicated to the use of ENM for the description of present and future plankton biogeography and diversity. A second working group will study the functional and phylogenetic diversity of plankton communities, and consequences for marine ecosystem function and service provision. PlankDiv will also promote networking among early career researchers currently working on a diverse set of projects related to the impact of climate change on the structure and functioning of marine plankton ecosystems. ... To conserve the world’s oceans we must go beyond science, and use it to inform policy and management, and ultimately to catalyze change. The International Marine Conservation Congress--hosted by the Society for Conservation Biology Marine Section--brings together conservation professionals and students to develop new and powerful tools to further marine conservation science and policy. ... The deep-sea is the largest ecosystem on Earth, it harbours high biodiversity and provides a wealth of resources yet, it is also the least explored and understood. Since their first edition in 1977, the international deep-sea symposia have been invaluable forums for exchange of information on the most recent deep-sea explorations and scientific advances. Moreover, the symposia have also been wellsprings of cooperation and formation of new research groups and projects. In 2015 it is the turn of Aveiro, Portugal to host the International Deep-Sea Biology Symposium. ... [Information des Anbieters]
The 4th international conference on “Progress in Marine Conservation in Europe 2015” offers a regular international forum for discussions on currently important marine conservation issues in Europe with occasional examples from beyond. The upcoming conference will be a continuation of the three international conferences which proved to be encouraging events with attendance of more than 200 experts from 20 countries. The conference invites a wide range of participants and organizations such as international conventions and agreements, policy makers, conservation managers, scientists and inter- and non-governmental organizations. Attendance is limited to 250 participants. ... [Information of the supplier]
The MARES Consortium and EuroMarine Network are pleased to invite you to participate in the Second Mares Conference on Marine Ecosystems Health and Conservation. This international conference is expected to attract around 200 attendees from across the world, with strong representation from the European region. It presents a unique opportunity to bring together marine researchers, scientists, educators, and policymakers to address the main issues regarding the impact of human activities on the natural marine environment.
