The Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde was founded 1791 and covers zoology, botany and palaeontology. Original, the collection base on the ducal collection of Baden-Wuerttemberg, which dates back to the 16th century. Over the centuries the collections grew and it still due. It comprises many different objects (e. g. more than four million fossils and insects) and is consult by several international specialists. Since 1985 the museum consist of two locations, the Museum am Löwentor and the Schloss Rosenstein. Most of the palaeontological collection is host in the Museum am Löwentor, furthermore most scientific collections are stored here. The Schloss Rosentein serves as exhibition area for aspects of the natural history. Four divisions (botany, entomology, palaeontology and zoology) conduct research on those four fields.
