Genes to Cognition (G2C) is a neuroscience research programme with the dual aim of discovering fundamental biological principles and important insights into brain disease. G2C is an international collaborative program initiated by Dr. Seth Grant and supported by the Wellcome Trust following the discovery that multiprotein complexes formed by intracellular proteins and neurotransmitter receptors were important for neuronal plasticity and behaviour. Multiprotein complexes are involved with dozens of brain diseases, control multiple types of behaviours and are involved with the responses to drug treatments of mental disorders. Evolutionary studies show ancient forms of the complexes evolved over a billion years in single cell animals and may represent the origin of the brain. The long term goal is to understand the molecular basis of the extraordinarily complex brain of humans, how this complexity evolved, what it confers on behaviour and why brain evolution made us susceptible to mental illness. GBOL - German Barcode of Life: → Inventarisierung und genetische Charakterisierung der Tiere, Pflanzen und Pilze Deutschlands. Das GBOL-Projekt hat das Ziel die Artenvielfalt aller deutschen Tiere, Pilze und Pflanzen anhand ihres genetischen DNA-Barcodes (Fingerabdrucks) zu erfassen. Damit übernimmt Deutschland als Wissenschaftsnation eine führende Rolle in einem internationalen Konsortium aus Naturkundemuseen, Zoos, Herbarien, Forschungseinrichtungen und staatlichen Institutionen, die den Aufbau einer "DNA Barcode Bibliothek des Lebens" (pdf) zum Ziel haben. Bis heute sind weltweit ~1,5 Millionen DNA Barcodes von ~145.000 beschriebenen Arten in der BOLD Datenbank erfasst (Stand: Dez. 2011). GBOL ist ein deutschlandweites Netzwerk aus verschiedenen Naturkundemuseen und anderen Biodiversitätsforschungsinstituten. Die GBOL Partner stellen ihre professionelle taxonomische Expertise und ihre bereits existierende Infrastruktur (Sammlungen/Biobanken, Datenbanken, Bioinformatik-Plattformen und Labore) zur Verfügung, um umfassend und flächendeckend die Tier- und Pflanzenarten Deutschlands zu sammeln, zu katalogisieren, wissenschaftlich zu beschreiben, zu sequenzieren und in die globale Referenz-Barcode Datenbank „BOLD“ einzuspeisen. The Science Environment for Ecological Knowledge (SEEK) is a five year initiative designed to create cyberinfrastructure for ecological, environmental, and biodiversity research and to educate the ecological community about ecoinformatics. SEEK participants are building an integrated data grid (EcoGrid) for accessing a wide variety of ecological and biodiversity data and analytical tools (Kepler) for efficiently utilizing these data stores to advance ecological and biodiversity science. An intelligent middleware system (SMS) will facilitate integration and synthesis of data and models within these systems. The three components of the SEEK cyberinfrasture are: (1) the EcoGrid, (2) a Semantic Mediation system, and (3) an Analysis and Modeling system.
