Every abstract will be reviewed. Abstracts will be accepted as oral or poster presentations depending on their quality. All accepted abstracts will be published in the journal medizinischegenetik, edition 1-2013. You will receive an email whether your abstract was accepted as oral presentation or as poster by January 1, 2013. All presenters are requested to submit their presentation at least three hours before the start of their session to the Media Check. The GfH Presentation Award 2013 of 1000 Euro for outstanding research by young scientists presented as a spoken contribution at the conference will be awarded on Friday (March 22, 2013, 15:15). All young scientists submitting spoken presentations are encouraged to apply. All posters will be presented for the whole duration of the meeting. The posters can be mounted on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from 13:00 hrs CET on. The dismantling of posters should not start before Friday, March 22, 2013. GBOL - German Barcode of Life: → Inventarisierung und genetische Charakterisierung der Tiere, Pflanzen und Pilze Deutschlands. Das GBOL-Projekt hat das Ziel die Artenvielfalt aller deutschen Tiere, Pilze und Pflanzen anhand ihres genetischen DNA-Barcodes (Fingerabdrucks) zu erfassen. Damit übernimmt Deutschland als Wissenschaftsnation eine führende Rolle in einem internationalen Konsortium aus Naturkundemuseen, Zoos, Herbarien, Forschungseinrichtungen und staatlichen Institutionen, die den Aufbau einer "DNA Barcode Bibliothek des Lebens" (pdf) zum Ziel haben. Bis heute sind weltweit ~1,5 Millionen DNA Barcodes von ~145.000 beschriebenen Arten in der BOLD Datenbank erfasst (Stand: Dez. 2011). GBOL ist ein deutschlandweites Netzwerk aus verschiedenen Naturkundemuseen und anderen Biodiversitätsforschungsinstituten. Die GBOL Partner stellen ihre professionelle taxonomische Expertise und ihre bereits existierende Infrastruktur (Sammlungen/Biobanken, Datenbanken, Bioinformatik-Plattformen und Labore) zur Verfügung, um umfassend und flächendeckend die Tier- und Pflanzenarten Deutschlands zu sammeln, zu katalogisieren, wissenschaftlich zu beschreiben, zu sequenzieren und in die globale Referenz-Barcode Datenbank „BOLD“ einzuspeisen. Die morphologische Artidentifikation wird zunächst durch spezialisierte Experten (Taxonomen) erfolgen, die ihr Wissen über die Morphologie, Ökologie, Reproduktionsmodus und Lebenszyklus bestimmter Taxa einbringen. Mit modernsten DNA Sequenziermethoden wird in einem zweiten Schritt der DNA Barcode entschlüsselt. Der Artensteckbrief wird mit dem DNA Barcode verknüpft und in einer öffentlich zugänglichen DNA Barcode Referenz-Datenbank verfügbar gemacht. The study of regulatory RNAs in the control of prokaryotic genomes has become a very active and rapidly growing field. New small and large noncoding RNA molecules continue to be discovered at a staggering rate in bacterial model organisms as well as in the transcriptomes of bacterial communities. Newly discovered structural and functional aspects of such RNAs have reached a degree of breadth that requires a meeting with a strong focus on bacterial RNA research to fully address the diversity of these new regulators of gene expression and bring together the scientists involved in these studies. Regulating with RNA in Bacteria was the first conference dedicated to this topic and premiered a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge advances and the latest perspectives in the areas of discovery, mechanisms and structure of bacterial riboregulators. This conference is the successor of two well-received previous meetings that were held in Berlin (2009) and San Juan (2011), and will be co-sponsored by DFG Program SPP1258 on Sensory and regulatory RNA in prokaryotes. We believe that the topic will attract many researchers from abroad and expect up to 250 participants. Aside from lectures by a number of international experts there will be additional oral presentations selected from submitted abstracts. Individualised medicine based on patient genomes will have an enormous impact on healthcare. With breakthroughs in DNA sequencing technology, the number of sequenced genomes could reach >1 Million within 5–10 years. The simultaneous generation and integration of this associated molecular and clinical data will provide an unprecedentedly rich set of “big data” for basic research and translation. Integration of these data will provide new research opportunities, for example, through the identification of novel biomarkers or by enabling the identification of causal relationships in molecular biology through analysing complex datasets, but will also come with significant technical and bioethical challenges. This EMBL-Wellcome Genome Campus Conference on “Big Data in Biology & Health” will be held at EMBL Heidelberg, and will alternate between Heidelberg and Hinxton yearly to address the opportunities and challenges of “big data” analytics, advance basic research and explore translational opportunities.
