Welcome to antbase.org, the Social Insects WWW ant pages. Antbase is now providing for the first time access to all the ant species of the world, one of the ecologically most important groups of animals worldwide. Antbase is a collaborative effort between scientists from around the world, aiming at providing the best possible access to the wealth of information on ants, to fulfill the conservation needs of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI), and the Species Survival Commission of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). ... FORMIS 2009 is a composite of several ant literature databases. It contains citations for a large fraction of the world's ant literature (about 45,000 references). FORMIS contains all known ant taxonomic literature (through 1996). It also contains comprehensive bibliographies of leaf-cutting ants, fire ants, and Russian wood ants. FORMIS is also the only database which covers ant literature before the 1970s. For further details please see contributions and credits. This database is designed to allow convenient searches of titles, keywords and abstracts when available (online searches or downloads). Citations from this database can be exported to create specialty databases or personal reprint indexes. FORMIS is only updated every year or two, so it is not a source for the most recent ant literature. ... [Information of the supplier]
AntWeb provides tools for exploring the diversity and identification of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). These tools have been developed to encourage the study of ants, to facilitate the use of ants in inventory and monitoring programs, and to provide ant taxonomists with access to images of type specimens. Currently AntWeb contains information on the ant faunas of several areas in the Nearctic and Malagasy biogeographic regions, and global coverage of all ant genera. Antweb is funded from private donations and from grants from the National Science Foundation. ... [Information of the supplier]
The Hymenoptera Name Server provides a unique mode of presentation of information on the names of Hymenoptera. The data are extracted from the scientific literature: from original descriptions, revisions, and taxonomic catalogs. [Information of the supplier, modified]
The ECatSym project provides the first online catalog for sawflies (Insecta, Hymenoptera). The ECatSym database comprises tools to search for the various existing name combinations (valid names, synonyms, misspellings, common names). The user is led to the valid name for the requested taxon and receives a complete list of name combinations associated with this taxon, the distribution within the zoogeographic regions, and whether the species is fossil or extant. For each name combination its availability and nomenclatural status are given. Additional tools lead to lists displaying the common names in 19 languages, the distribution in countries and provinces (as far as available), and the literature references. ... Nearly half of the c. 2800 bumblebee names have been published since the last world-wide checklist in 1923. Consequently, there was a need for an overview which, although bound to require revision, might provide an improved framework for more detailed regional studies. This checklist begins to address this need. Inevitably, it cannot be expected to solve all biological and nomenclatural problems, but it is hoped that by identifying some of the major problems it will stimulate further research. ... The UK Bees, Wasps and Ants Recording Society (BWARS) is a subscription based amateur recording society, operating under the aegis of the UK Biological Records Centre (BRC). The Society is affiliated to the British Entomological and Natural History Society. The Society aims to promote the recording of aculeate Hymenoptera in Great Britain and Ireland, and to foster links with similar societies and interested individuals throughout Europe. There are about 400 members (including museum and university professionals and overseas “Corresponding Members”) whose activities are directed by a small committee which guides policy. The Society exists to gather distribution and biological data on the aculeate hymenoptera (which includes many important pollinators), to provide advice and training to society members and the general public, and to promote understanding of aculeates. The Society has no conservation remit, and is prepared to make its data freely available to anyone who wants access to it – this includes conservation agencies (both statutory and voluntary), University researchers, pollination ecologists, taxonomists, planners and developers. ...
