Der deutsche Wald stirbt – seit nunmehr 25 Jahren. Zumindest in der öffentlichen Debatte wird das Sterben in immer neuen Variationen diskutiert, während in der Forstwissenschaft das ‚sogenannte Waldsterben’ inzwischen überwiegend als Medienphänomen wahrgenommen wird. Kaum jedoch gerät in den Blick, wie sich ein Phänomen wie der Diskurs um das Waldsterben im Zusammenspiel zwischen Wissenschaft, Politik und Medien überhaupt erst herausbildet und wodurch es geprägt wird. Die Frage nach den Bedingungen, Funktionsweisen und Spielregeln, unter denen dies geschieht, ist aber von zentraler Bedeutung, wenn man aktuelle Umweltdiskurse verstehen und einen Beitrag zur modernen Politikberatung leisten will. Gerne wird dabei übersehen, dass der „sterbende Wald“ ein Topos ist, der historisch immer wieder zu den unterschiedlichsten Anlässen aktualisiert wurde und wird (Teilstudie 1). Eine Analyse der Waldsterbens-Debatte kann daher exemplarisch deutlich machen, wie ein Umweltdiskurs im Zusammenwirken von politischen Akteuren (Teilstudie 3) und (Forst)Wissenschaft (Teilstudie 2) mit ihren jeweils spezifischen Interessen, Handlungslogiken, Entscheidungskriterien und realen Praktiken entsteht. ODS ist ein Projekt, welches es sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, den Klimawandel unter Mithilfe so vieler Menschen wie möglich zu beobachten, zu protokollieren, zu erforschen und erlebbar zu machen. Hierfür versuchen die am Projekt beteiligten Wissenschaftler, die breite Öffentlichkeit einzubeziehen. Die Teilnehmer sollen die jahreszeitlichen Wechsel in der Natur beobachten und diese phänologischen Beobachtungen mit Hilfe zur Verfügung gestellter Fragebögen und eigener Fotos dokumentieren. The aims of the project are related to the understanding of diversity and ecosystem function and their relationship to human impact in forests and agroforestry systems of the Mata Atlântica in Paraná State, Brazil. General goals in this ecosystem approach are: 1.)to monitor ecosystem functionality and services in terms of biomass deposition and decomposition, nutrient cycling and forest succession including botany and soil microbiology at a functional level (tree growth, microbial biomass and activity),2.)to assess the diversity of soil biota in different habitats, estimate the magnitude of species richness and species loss and changes in community structure caused by anthropogenic alteration of the environment, and 3.)to develop a classification system indicating the quality of secondary forests in the southern Mata Atlântica as habitat for autochthonous (soil invertebrate) species. The EuMon project attempts to provide a European framework that standardizes, focuses and coordinates existing monitoring programs by comparing and integrating existing methods and monitoring schemes of species and habitats of community interests. The most successful methods in terms of cost effectiveness, regional robustness will be selected and tested for their European wide applicability. EuMon will pay special attention that existing monitoring programs can incorporate these methods and will give recommendations how new and successful monitoring programs can be established.Special consideration for implementing monitoring programs will be paid by studying the social effects of monitoring regimes, because the relationship between amateurs and professionals are meant to be most important for implementing a successful monitoring regime.The establishing of the NATURA 2000 network is one of the main actions on a European level to halt biodiversity loss. In Germany, the states (Länder) are responsible as a matter of principle for the selection of sites for the NATURA 2000 system of protected areas. Site selection in marine areas was initially only possible within the territorial waters bounded by the 12 nautical mile limit, but not in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ, 12-200 nautical miles), in which the sovereign powers of Germany are limited to certain activities. However, the amendment to the German Federal Nature Conservation Act (Bundesnaturschutzgesetz) in April 2002 created the statutory basis for implementing NATURA 2000 in the marine areas of the EEZ: The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety(BMU) and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) are now responsible for site selection, designation and administration of these areas. By the middle of the 19th century, lynxes had completely disappeared from Bavaria. It is due to an approved release of 17 lynxes (between 1982-1987) in the area of today’s Šumava National Park that lynxes again populate the Bavarian-Bohemian border area. The two national parks (Bavarian Forest and Šumava) currently represent the core lynx habitat, and the centre from which the animals are spreading to new areas. It is the priority objective of our project to collect current data on lynxes and their use of territory, and on the relationship between the predator and its large animals of prey – roe and red deer – within a large mountain forest ecosystem left mainly to nature.
