The aim of the BUKO Campaign against Biopiracy is to make the political, social and economical components of biodiversity public. It criticises the way in that biological diversity is only discussed as a topic in conservation. This disguises the fact that it is being appropriated by multinational concerns, in conjunction with government research institutes. This is biopiracy. This rejection is accompanied by a radical critique of north-south relations as well as global capitalism, its forms of domination and power structures. In the framework of an initiative to advance biodiversity research in Germany, we will establish three exemplary large-scale and long-term research sites (funded by the German Research Foundation). They are termed Biodiversity Exploratories, in contrast to mainly descriptive observatories. The exploratories will establish and sustain the scientific infrastructure and develop the intellectual framework needed to address critical questions about changes in biodiversity and to evaluate the impacts of those changes for ecosystem processes. Thus, in the exploratories biodiversity and ecosystem research will be merged at a large scale and with a long-term perspective. In this first phase the exploratories will address the relationship between land-use intensity, biodiversity change, and ecosystem functioning for selected taxa. After establishment, these exploratories will also integrate further contributing projects proposed by the German research community. The foundation aims to preserve animal species (and their natural environment) which, although under severe threat of global extinction, do not have a strong enough lobby for their conservation. The Species Conservation Foundation achieves its goals through the joint initiative of currently 43 zoos and several nature conservation organisations, which provide public relations and financial support. International species conservation attains a new dimension through this concentration of specialists and funds. The innovative aspect of the Species Conservation Foundation’s concept is the idea of winning businesses as exclusive sponsors for a certain animal species in addition to conventional canvassing for donations and sponsorship.
