... [Redaktion vifabio]

It is my great honour and pleasure to invite you to the 58th Annual Symposium of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS). The IAVS is the world’s leading scientific society of plant community ecologists and promotes research in all aspects of vegetation science and its application. It holds meetings and excursions, publishes scientific journals (Journal of Vegetation Science and Applied Vegetation Science) and provides other mechanisms to facilitate communication among vegetation scientists worldwide. ... We are pleased to invite you to the 24th workshop of the European Vegetation Survey, which will be held in Rennes (France) from 4th to 8th May 2015 and co-organized by the Department of Ecology in University of Rennes 1, the Department of Geography in University of Rennes 2 and the French Society of Phytosociology. We propose two main topics for the workshop : Topic 1: "Typology and process as two complementary facets of vegetation survey and mapping", Topic 2: "Vegetation in coastal and inland dunes and cliffs”. ... Vegetation databases have proven an irreplaceable medium to store and maintain the vast volume of data produced by vegetation scientists worldwide. They do not only protect data and the laborious work invested to produce them from getting lost, but also enable scientists to analyse large datasets in order to answer current research questions. A major task of present research is to find underlying ecological, temporal and spatial processes that shape plant communities. In this context, databases can serve as important tools supplementing experimental approaches. Inference of processes requires e.g. linkages to environmental data at adequate temporal and spatial scales and plant functional data, but also advanced statistical methods like path analysis techniques. The next meeting of the German Working Group on Vegetation Databases is dedicated to the role databases are playing in detecting ecological processes from various vegetation-related data. We encourage presentations (talks and posters) focussing on questions and methods with special emphasis on the analysis of vegetation data with respect to underlying ecological processes and cause and effect relationships. Besides, more general contributions on other technical or scientific advances in vegetation databanking are welcome. The workshop will be hosted by the Landscape Ecology Group of the University of Oldenburg from 4th to 6th of March 2015. We will start the workshop by giving an introduction to path analysis and structural equation modelling (Wednesday, 4th of March). These statistical analyses are well suited to identify causal relationships between parameters, test ecological hypotheses for their significance and are able to deal with large datasets. The following two days will we dedicated to talks and posters presenting ecological research questions inferred from vegetation databases. ... [Information of the supplier]
Palearctic dry grasslands have a long tradition of community analysis and description, leading to a detailed picture of these habitats, especially in Central Europe. In contrast, research on the biology of species and populations, such as pollination biology, dispersal ecology, demography or population genetics, is expanding rapidly. The connection between the two scientific disciplines is often weak although, actually, populations are part of communities and communities consist out of populations. We will therefore focus on this connection between population biology and community ecology for all dry grassland biota (invertebrates, vertebrates, non-vascular plants, vascular plants, fungi and lichens) as the overall topic of the next EDGM. ... On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, I would like to invite all vegetation scientists, new and old, to attend the 59th Annual Symposium of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS) that is returning to Brazil after 14 years, but this time in a completely different community type – the savannas of central Brazil. The Cerrado, the name used for the savannas of central Brazil, is home to an extensive flora, with over 12000 species in its extension of over 2 million km2. The plant communities vary in physiognomy from extensive grassy fields through savanna to forests, both riverine and on uplands, and higher altitude rocky fields. Fire is an important factor in the molding of these communities. Although the plants may not be as well collected as in other parts of the world, the Herbarium of the University of Brasilia has an outstanding collection with emphasis on the flora of the Cerrado. For the first time in the history of the IAVS, the meeting in 2016 will be within the tropics, but that is not to say that we will be in a hot and humid climate. The Cerrado has a distinct wet season, during our summer, and dry season, during our winter. The meeting will be at the end of our fall season, remember that we will be in the southern hemisphere again, and this is the beginning of the dry season in the region, so we should have warm days and cooler evenings and nights. The local where the meeting will be held, Pirenópolis, is a small historical city in Brazil. Pirenópolis is located in central Brazil approximately 150 km west of Brasília, our capital, where most of you will arrive. Hopefully everyone will have some time to spend in Brasília also to see why it has been included in UNESCO´s World Heritage sites. The specific theme of IAVS will be “Conservation of Plant Communities: From Environmental Drivers to Ecosystem Services”, although talks on all aspects of research related to the study of vegetation science will be welcome. There will be specific sessions on Classification of plant communities, Conservação of plant communities, Fire and grazing in the management of non-forest vegetation and Restoration of plant communities, among other topics. We are confident that all participants in this meeting will be satisfied with the scientific program, field excursions and social events that are being planned. We also hope that all participants will return to their institutes or places of origin with new ideas and new contacts, both national and international. ... [Information of the supplier]
[Redaktion vifabio]
At the core of Flora Malesiana is the production and publication of taxonomic accounts on the flora of the region. The symposium organisers are inviting speakers to highlight new research findings which are helping to classify the massive species diversity found across the region. A particular theme of this symposium will be the role of living plants held in Botanic Gardens and Research Institutes around the world in helping to understand biodiversity. Speakers who can provide insight into the cultivation of plants from the region and how they have been used for scientific and horticultural research and conservation are particularly welcome. The classification and naming of plants is the foundation from which conservation activities can be delivered. The Symposium welcomes presentations from researchers who can highlight how their research is helping to identify plants under threat and the impact that their research is having on their conservation. The organising committee would also welcome a range of talks on other aspects of the flora of the region such as Systematics, Sustainable Development, Ecology, Biogeography, Evolutionary Biology, e-Taxonomy, Education. ...
