Der Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e.V. (BUND) engagiert sich seit Jahren für die bedrohte Wildkatze Felis s. silvestris und ihren Lebensraum, die naturnahen Wälder und strukturreichen Heckenlandschaften. Um die scheuen Tiere effektiv schützen zu können, werden ausreichend Nachweise über ihre Verbreitung in Deutschland und ihre genetische Vielfalt benötigt. Im Rahmen des vom Bundesamt für Naturschutz mit Mitteln des Förderprogramms Biologische Vielfalt geförderten Projekts „Wildkatzensprung“ sammelt der BUND daher seit 2012 bundesweit Haarproben der Wildkatze. Diese werden vom Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg im Labor genetisch analysiert.Daraus ist Deutschlands erste Wildkatzen-Genotypen-Datenbank entstanden.
