Big data analytics is transforming biology and medicine by allowing researchers to extract more information and knowledge from rapidly growing diverse types of data. This India-EMBO Symposium focuses on the translational interface of big data with biomedicine at various scales ranging from microbes to societies. The meeting, other than summarizing the potential of such applications and practical challenges therein, will specifically discuss the different requirements and the need for calibrating big data analytics to the larger purpose of the "actionable information." A computational model for prioritizing drug candidates that will undergo further pre-clinical and clinical testing, vastly differs in terms of error tolerance, from the use of large datasets to form public health policy evidence. Specifically, the "actionability" of any insight would be guided by pragmatic concerns and ethics, which vary between applications. Thus, the emphasis will be to form a well reasoned articulation ... Several RNA viruses constitute the majority of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, however, there is very little focus on research into the biology and pathogenesis of RNA viruses in India. Studies on epidemiology and disease burden, risk factors, the immune response to RNA viruses, circulating virus strains and virus evolution, animal models of disease, antivirals and vaccines are strikingly absent. Emerging RNA viruses such as Zika virus and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus are a matter of grave concern to India. Therefore, this symposium will play a key role in bringing together national and international RNA virus experts from diverse areas on one platform to guide the future of RNA virus research in India. This symposium will provide impetus on laying a strong foundation for both the fundamental and translational aspects of RNA virus biology with a focus on epidemiology, immune response, virus evolution and vaccine trials. ... There has been tremendous progress in the past few years regarding our understanding of DNA replication in eukaryotes, both yeast and mammals. Many important questions in the field are poised to be answered within the next decade. These include understanding DNA replication at the biochemical and three-dimensional protein structure levels. In addition, studies using high throughput technologies at the cellular and organismal levels are poised to answer how accurate replication of the genome is ensured by controlling origin firing in space and time. Several human diseases, including cancer, have already been linked to DNA replication stress, a term that refers to perturbations in DNA replication. Therefore, a better understanding of how cells respond to this will help us understand disease development and responses to therapy. By bringing together experts in the basic biology of DNA replication and DNA replication stress, this symposium aims to fuel further progress in these important fields. ... This symposium will build on the first meeting which took place in 2016. Microbiologists and immunologists will again come together to provide different viewpoints on the same problems in joint sessions. While maintaining continuity in topics, the meeting concept will be evolved by introducing novel sessions on bacterial defenses against innate immunity, an area prominently covered by abstract submissions in the 2016 meeting, and on fungus host interactions, an under-researched area of great medical importance ... This interdisciplinary symposium will highlight exciting new insights into the molecular principles that govern the functional framework of genomes in space and time. The meeting program will cover all levels of organisational complexity, from DNA to chromosomes, and in model systems ranging from bacteria to humans. A particular highlight will be the integration of discoveries made in different disciplines, including cell and molecular biology, biophysics, modelling, structural biology and biochemistry. ... The main objective of this EMBO India Symposium is to bring together a collection of top international and Indian researchers from interdisciplinary backgrounds that are leaders in this field, to discuss the key current biological and methodological questions, to foster new interdisciplinary collaborations with Indian researchers from quantitative backgrounds, and to inspire young Indian researchers and students to enter this field and pioneer new methods. This EMBO India Symposium will focus on all aspects of gene regulatory dynamics from analysis of regulatory sequence motifs, transcription factor-DNA interaction, local chromatin dynamics and epigenetic modifications, RNA dynamics at the level of transcription and post-transcriptional processing, to 3D dynamics of chromatin and the resulting gene regulatory dynamics on daily and development time scales. ... Join us in Berlin in 2019 for a conference focused on the regulatory roles of RNAs. Topics will include generation of diversity through RNA-mediated processes, diversity among RNAs themselves through processes such as RNA editing, and analysis of gene expression at the single-cell level.
